Most aftermarket cams now a days are indexed properly so it really is not necessary. Stock is a different story, many are saying they are not indexed right.

You would need to attach a degree wheel to the crank, and you would need to set up a dial indicator on the #1 cylinder intake and exhaust valves.

You'd then remove the plugs and turn the crank with a breaker bar, noting the valve events as they occur with respect to the degree wheel.

Is there any way of doing this without taking the motor out?

Cam gear

To TED B:
This is a question about you 280 cam, if you don't mind.
It was very impressive how you made the adjustment to
improve Torque . Could you explain how you do this? By
adjusting the cam gear only?
Thanks

No need to pull the engine out.

Hi

Can you pls explain how to zero the cams w/o taking the engine out? I was under the impression that you'll have problems fitting the degree wheel.

Thanks

Don't know the specifics, but all cars down here get zeroed in before cam adjustments and in all cases the crankshaft degree wheel fit in fine. Just need to remove the serpentine belt and tensioner, then the crankshaft bolt with an impact wrench. I can't comment too much as the tuner is very secretive to his procedure and final settings. In fact I don't know where the 0,0 in my cams is at, but I know all cars have different tolerances since he's using similar timmings in the cars and the cam gears rest at different degrees.
