All the techs there, and me from previous cars, recommend the taller filter, simply because there is more filtering media.

oh, btw, the list for the washer is $3.69 and list for filter is $12.08, I always pay a lot less tho.
I always heard the shorter and wider filter has more media, but that they are so close it doesnt really matter. My dealer doesnt include a washer with the filter, it's a separate part.

Thats rediculous! Dealer charged me 4.31 per filter and just gave me 20 crush washers (the copper ones) for free.

Search amsoil and see for yourself mobil 1 isn't bad but there are much better options. As far as the factory filter the amsoil oil filter is far superior in filtration. I used to use mobil 1 and their oil filter btw which is better than the factory filter for years in various cars I have owned several with over 200K and I can say with all honesty that amsoil is better. Amsoil>mobil 1>dino oil Amsoil filter>mobil 1 filter>factory filter

It's easy as hell. Once you do it, you will realize how easy it was and then kick yourself for not trying it yourself earlier.

Help, I can't get the oil filter off, the dealer must have used a air tool to get the filter on. Any ideas? I think the size that fits the short stubby oil filter would be a 78 or 79 MM adapter but I don't think that is sold in most autostores. Help. I may resort to a screwdriver through the filter but don't want to.

grab a screw driver, wack it through the filter - not from the bottom, but from one side to another side,

then you can grab hold of the screw driver for leverage to turn it

always works for me =)

i went to walmart, mobil1 synthetic 10w30=$22 (on sale from $26)
K&N Oil Filter +new crush washer=$12

Since i work at a motorcycle dealership i just bring my used oil to work with me. This is a good write up and for a total noob who has never done their own oil change or anything besides pump their own gas, this is a good way to build confidence and get the reading more items on the forums to do their own work and not paying rediculous labor charges.

now 448K on truck still using the original crush washer and no leaks still.... that washer at every change is a waste of time....

Realize this is an old thread, just wanted to add some more useful info for the guys with MRs.

For the Evo 8/9 MR Trace the wire back about 12 inches from where it comes out of the oil plug and there is a clip you can disconnect. Do that, and then slide a box wrench over it and unscrew the drain plug. I used a 19mm box wrench.

Or.....You could also use a flarenut wrench like the picture below. This will allow you to remove the oil drain plug without disconnecting the wire. I wasn't able to find one in 19mm at my local autoparts store, otherwise I would have done it this way.
