Sorry i edited it.

Yeah the levels were ok, it was because i had the car on one ramp at an angle. It went away after I took it off of the ramp.

I have a new question up if you'd like to take a crack at that one ----^

Just changed the oil today for the first time. It looks like you don't have to remove the undertray but I did anyways. The drain plug and filter are on the passenger side towards the rear of the undertray.

The crush washer is an M14 washer and my drain plug was a 16mm. I was full at 4 qts but that was probably because I didn't jack the car down, but even if I did I think spining the crank may force some more oil out as it seems difficult for us to get all the 5.4 qts outta the system. I think there's an oil cooler, etc. for oil to get trapped and not make it to the drain pan. The Mitsu factory screwed that filter on tight! I had to drive a screwdriver through the filter to spin in it. I went with a Mobil 1 filter and Redline Oil. Seems to have a bit more torque through the rev range.

Cheers!

To the OP, in the step 6 you wrote, "Tighten the drain plug and air filter." I know you mean oil filter.

You might want to tighten the drain plug to 23 ft lbs.

EDIT: OMG, just realized that this is a 1 year and 4 months old thread.

for those of you with MR's, it's not a 17mm bolt on the drain plug....it's a 19mm. and that wire is the wire for your oil temp sensor going to the oil temp guage

ODUB,

Did you use jacks or a ramp for the change? Because I heard that using the jacks that sit in the trunk is a bad idea, and that ramps are much safer. Also, did any check engine/and or knocking problems happen after you changed your oil. I want to do it myself since I hate the dealership, but I am afraid I might screw something up really bad.

Thanks all

Rhino ramps from the local auto parts store are perfect and safe. It's hard to screw up anything as long as you don't start the engine with no oil in it! Oil change is a cinch--get the right wrench, an oil crush ring, a new filter, and oil and that's all you need! Recycle the old oil and filter hopefully at the same place you buy the oil at afterwards.

changing the tranny oil, transfer case oil, and rear diff oil is only a shade harder than doing the oil -- mainly it's just harder access to pour the new oil in.

you can do it

Call it wasteful, but every other oil change, I run a clean 1/4qt through the motor to flush it out a little. I do this while I have the oil plug and filter removed and the pan completely drained. I simply lower the jack and pour the 1/4 qt of new oil in and wait for it to drain again. You will be surprised what comes out...

Also I prime the filter by filling it up a little with fresh oil, not just oiling the gasket. Just pour 1/4 qt in an spin it around inside before you put in. That's just me tho.

Thanks for the tips from cornercarver and AV8NDOC, I am going to head to pep boys for ramps, a wrench with 18mm, 19mm fittings, a creeper and a filter wrench (maybe).

Thanks again

a trick for taking out the drain plug with no mess (only works if you have a catch pan with a screen in the drain hole) is grip it with your thumb and index finger like normal, SLOWLY back it until you feel a little play like its ready to come out then give it a quick twist and get your hand out of there quick and let the drain plug fall right into the pan!!! barely get a drop on your hand... as for the filter i do this... you can take a ziplock freezer bag put it around the filter then simply unscrew it let it fall into the bag!!! done deal no oil dripping everywhere....

all you need to do is jack up the passenger side a bit and then lower the car again while it is draining. Once it is done draining, just jack it back up a bit. Always smart to use a jack stand while your under there...
