When I first started talking about getting an Evo when they came out, this kid that I worked with who had a Lancer OZ at the time said "Oh, those gauges will drive you crazy. They are the worst design that I have ever seen and I hate them."
Well, think of it this way:
All the stock lights that monitor the car's performance are red.
All the stock lights that monitor the comfort stuff (radio, AC) are white.
It makes sense to me to leave them like that. I have never been one to have looks take precedence over performance and this just seems like the color coordination that is in place should be left that way (to me, at least).
That's just my $0.02.

The reason to have one consistent color in the car is to have less distraction (for your eye receptors) while trying to concentrate on night driving.
Futhermore, RED is a better color than green for instrumentaiton as it does not excite your eye receptors so much and when you return to looking at the dark road, you do not have to wait so long for your eyes to adjust back. This is why most boats have red inteior cabin lighting for night time use. You get less contrast with red, but at night it is acutally safer. The time it takes your eyes to transition form say white or green to dark is longer than transitioning from red to dark. I forgot my Biology (please correct me if I am wrong), but it has to do with not having to activate so many cone (or is it rod) receptors in your eye. You use mostly your rod (or is it cone) receptors at night...
I never did like the all the green instrumentation in my VW.... hmmm... mybe I should convert to red

Be glad that the pepboys boots are a bit too big, b/c you need to double layer them for the red color to match. one boot alone gives you a pinkish color.
btw, I just replaced my HU with a panasonic that has a red display that can match the gauges exactly... now I just need to replace that damn clock with a red LCD, and the whole dash will work nicely. I'll post pics when I'm done.

I used the 99-00 Honda Civic Si bulbs from their climate control. They are twist bulbs and have orange bulb condoms. Just take the condom off and put it on your bulb.
Worked great and are cheap too.
Just go to the Honda parts counter.

Ok guys so is there a write up on changing the light on the ignition which is also white. i know the 1st gen dsms have red(I own one) and I want the evo red as well so it matches. Also can you make the clock light up red or is that a lost cause??
I've been thinking about this one....... do the dash lights come wit the bulb condoms or are they red lights ??
One more thing too - hey Trey - how does the color of the civic bulb covers match up with the color of the dash lights ??? I'm looking to go as close as i can get to stock color and i just wonder if these are good.

if the gauge cluster is anything like the Celica gauge cluster, you have to solder tiny LED's to change the color. Its alot of work but after some practice you can do it pretty easily. It looks really good swapping celica's stock amber gauges to red, blue or white.
For anyone still interested, forget the condoms....

Some of the guys on the 2GNT board are using the led's successfully. You could possibly try the bulbs too I suppose. These worked great on my DSM as well.

There is a really good write up in the Lancer Howto on this subject. Also tells how to change the color of the clock. I did the key ring change, posted in that how to. Basically take 3 screws out of bottom of steering column, pop apart top and bottom, remove top, on top of ignition switch is a bulb holder on the top towards the steering wheel, rotate and pull back (was a little struggle, having a woman/girl with small hands would def help) change bulb for #74 red (or blue, or whatever, same one as for climate control/ashtray/cig lighter ring). put back together and enjoy!
