Learning about the engine bay
what's the best way to learn about the engine bay? i'm wondering how i can get a crash course on what it is, where it is, what does it do, and how do i access the part. are there any good books/manuals/reading material? since my car is one week old, i don't really want to go about poking around and taking things apart without knowing anything.....
just go here and see it all

read, read , read, get involved with mechanical stuff so you get a baasic understanding of how mechanical stuff works, get familiar with what youre car carries and you will start learning it will take moths/years to get the basics down, good luck
Go take an Auto Tech class at your local community college. As important as reading about engine mechanics is, there is just no subsitute for hands on experience. An elementary course on the modern combustion engine at a JUCO will help you immeasurably. You'll come away with tons of information and experience.

I disagree to an extent. I know I knew nothing about the 4g63 before I got my EVO, but I was excited to learn about it and through the manual and countless threads that I have read, I have learned enough to be able to understand all the basic aspects of the engine. As long as he is willing to learn, I don't think anyone needs to be mean.
On another note, your manual is good for some info, but more importantly, EvoM is a great resource that has anything and everthing on Evo's from How To's and Product Reports to what turbo might go best or why you need a fuel pump. Good luck and enjoy, but respect the car.

evoM has a wealth of information. Look at the how-to's and try some simple things yourself. Oil changes, other fluid replacement, or general maintenance items are great places to start. When you have money to mod, you should look at the how-to's and try doing them yourself, or with some friends. Good luck
I just had a brilliant idea... go buy yourself a $1000 1g DSM to wrench on. It has basically the same turbo 4g63 motor as your EVO so you will be getting some valuable experience where you need it. Most importantly, when you inevitably f*ck something up you'll be glad it was on a $1k DSM instead of your $30k EVO.
Theres a huge amounts of info in EVOM, just read...
i worked in cars, since i was 17, and im still kinda new to EVO's.
Soak as much info as you can from this site, but don't believe it all.(Some ppl will mislead you, or provide you wrong info)
Good luck, and Enjoy!!!!
