Learning about the engine bay

what's the best way to learn about the engine bay? i'm wondering how i can get a crash course on what it is, where it is, what does it do, and how do i access the part. are there any good books/manuals/reading material? since my car is one week old, i don't really want to go about poking around and taking things apart without knowing anything.....

aside from the bashing, you can take a mechanics course in school or something to up your IQ. I just learned as time went along and reading up on forums

+1 on reading and learning on here over time... just take a look at your engine bay and if you have any questions, just use the search and you should get some useful information

I disagree to an extent. I know I knew nothing about the 4g63 before I got my EVO, but I was excited to learn about it and through the manual and countless threads that I have read, I have learned enough to be able to understand all the basic aspects of the engine. As long as he is willing to learn, I don't think anyone needs to be mean.

On another note, your manual is good for some info, but more importantly, EvoM is a great resource that has anything and everthing on Evo's from How To's and Product Reports to what turbo might go best or why you need a fuel pump. Good luck and enjoy, but respect the car.

Was that necessary ? Did you know everything about evos (or just cars in general) when you bought one ? I didn't think so.

to the OP : just spend plenty of time on these forums and you will learn so much. Click here http://auto.howstuffworks.com/turbo to learn how turbos work. Thats a good start.

Yeah I just got my Evo IX SE about 3 days ago and I really don't know too much about it either, but I've been reading the threads here and learned quite a bit in 2days.

Your best bet is to find the book that Mitsu techs look at when they work on your car at the dealer....they have explanations for everything and also show step by steps on how to do most of the basic maintenance down to the really detailed stuff that 99.9999% of the people out there would never have to do....in the Honda community Helms makes those manuals....not really sure of the Mitsu equivalent.

+1 on the school course. You'd be suprised at how many colleges offer automotive courses. In fact I just graduated form one taking night classes after work. Pluss most are unacredited so there is no age limit( high school kids are welcome). I learned everything from engine rebuildind to brakes etc...

just hit new post......and read every thread...there is so much information out there, or hit search...but you have to be specific, you aren't going to just find a diagram pointing to everything with full detail description of the parts.......visit howstuffworks.com and look up turbos and motors....water/oil pump/ manual trans you'll be a pro in no time.......yea!
