B&B Downpipe question
B&B Downpipe question
I spent way to much time and effort this weekend and did not get the downpipe mounted to the turbo housing/exhaust manifold. Tried the copper OEM gasket that came off of the stock exhaust set up, but it seemed to thick to bolt the downpipe up.
Did anybody use a different gasket than the stock one with this downpipe, and do you have any exhaust leaks?

Just spoke with Kelly at B&B and she mentioned that they have started using a "sandwhich" type gasket for this section instead of the copper OEM gasket. I have these type of gaskets for the all of the other connections.
Does anyone think that this will not leak?

I purchased it about a week ago and it did not come with a gasket for the connection to the turbo housing/exhaust manifold.
Kelly at B&B is overnighting me one of the new gaskets for this section with no charge.
Just wanted to know if anyone has used this new gasket for this section, and if their are any leaks?

I received 3 new gaskets from Kelly at B&B that were overnighted for free. It is a flat sandwhich gasket like the ones for the other connections of the turbo back specifically cut for the downpipe.
Was going to put the downpipe in last night, but when trying to fit the downpipe to the o2 housing with the stock gasket last weekend I fried the threads on the bolts and housing... both on overnight from Mitsu.
Should have the turbo back on the car by Friday night or Saturday, depending on Mitsu getting the parts ASAP.
I will update as soon as I have the turbo back installed.

I installed a B&B DP today. I've had the catback on for about a month.
I used the oem donut and bolts/springs. Seals perfect. I did have the same problem trying to get the DP connected to the O2 housing/turbo. I could get one bolt started with the spring on but not the other. The springs are pretty strong and the second one needs to be comressed a little to get it on. Hard to do without stripping threads as someone has already done. I took the second spring and compressed it in a small vice then used two zipp ties one on each side to keep it that way, walla it went right on. You have to put the zipp ties 1 coil down on one end of the spring or the bolt won't fit through the spring. You can do this with both springs if you can't get either started. you could also use a C-clamp instead of a vice.
I used the oem gasket where it attaches to the stock cat for now because I don't have a 3" cat yet.
The B&B gaskets that I got to supposedly fix the flange seal were crap. They were not a foil sandwich material and about as thin as the copper gaskets I had originally recieved. Very cheap and I do not beleive they will last. I will not use them. Also found out my axleback was leaking because of the warped flanges where axleback connects to the midpipe. This is after installing much better gaskets than the ones they sent out to fix the problem. I cut some higher quality gasket material and replaced them adding a little copper gasket maker. See how long it last this time.
This will be a continuing problem that B&B will not fix.
The DP is a nice fit but I can't recommend anything B&B makes at this point after seeing how they handle defects with their products. Sending out cheap gaskets to try and fix warped/defective flanges is totally unacceptable
kcevo,
did B&B tell you to use their gasket on the turbo side rather than the stock donut, bolts and springs? The turbo end of the DP looks to me like it was specifically designed to be used with the stock parts.

No leaks and works like a charm.

Finally got everything together on Friday night. Since I had to buy a new o2 housing, I tried at first to attach the downpipe to the o2 housing then attach the housing to the manifold. This didn't work, because the A/C compressor was in the way. Unattached the downpipe from the o2 housing and put the o2 housing back in then put the downpipe on with a little bit of trouble as mojo mentioned above, but it went on using the OEM donut gaskets. The ones that B&B sent me were like the rest of the gaskets they use for the other connections on the turbo back. Don't know how they expected me to use these on the downpipe to the o2 housing as the holes didn't even line up. After the downpipe was installed the rest of the turbo back install was a snap. Started it up after reinstalling the radiator and fan since the o2 housing had to be replaced. Has to be the longest downpipe install in history. At first I didn't use any sealer and there was a leak from every connection on the exhaust except where the downpipe connects to the o2 housing. Took it back apart at each section and used RVT copper gasket maker on both sides of the gaskets and then put it back together. Let it sit for about 30 minutes and started it back up and there were no leaks at any of the connections. The exhaust is top quality, but the gaskets they give us are complete crap. A much thicker gasket would be ideal, but the gasket maker works like a charm, I have actually seen people use the copper gasket maker w/o any gaskets between the connections.
Wow installing the downpipe is really that difficult? i have my equiptment sitting in my garage waiting for a nice day, but i'm about to take it to a shop to get it installed if the dp is really that hard...

I had my stock (HOT) exhaust off and the B&B turbo back installed in under 45 min.
They did forget a 3" gasket for my cat delete. I used one of the early model copper gaskets they sent to make one out of asbestos.
I also used the stock dounut for the DP.
If you have a long extension and apply pressure to the DP spring bolts straight in, it goes right in. A lift deffinitely helps.
I am considering porting my exhaust manifold, turbo housing and O2 housing. After porting the O2 housing you have to use a flat gasket or Ultra Copper as the dounut won't seal.
They are also working with Dan from Vivid on a CEL fix.
I am going to try this: http://www.ponyexpressperformance.co...liminator.html
It shoud be in by Thursday. Will post if it works.
I love the sound and performance of the B&B.
