Oil pressure sender

I finally got around to hooking up my oil pressure sender. I initially tried to tee into the factory sender which is located right above the transfer case, a bit over on the driver's side, but there was simply not enough room for the sender let alone to work in. So I ended up making use of the plugged hole on the oil filter housing.
Pictured is the oil pressure sender and oil temp sender which doubles as a drain plug. Hope this helps and saves others time....

I performed the same install this weekend. I made the mistake of trying to make a "T" Connection to allow for an oil temp sender in addition to pressure, but the T-part was the only thing that leaked - so I ditched that part. The oil temp will probably have to go in the oil drain plug.

Do anyone find that your oil pressure spikes at 100 psi at over 5500 rpm? I have the proper amount of oil, but the pressure varies from 20-25 psi at idle to pegged over 100 psi near redline. Anyone else have the same?

well, I have a somewhat related question

My oil pressure gauge just came with a wire to hook up to the oil pressure sender. Am I supposed to just hook it up to the stock one somehow or am I missing a part? The directions were less than helpful

Missing a part. You need an oil pressure sender.

I see 100psi near redline aswell. Upon a cold start in the morning at about 60F pressure shoots up to 85psi for a couple of minutes as it warms up. This is with 10W-30. Once the motor is fully warm I see pressures within spec.

Service manual specs.
4.2psi or more @ Idle
43psi-100psi @ 3500 rpms

Hey there...I was wanting to instal the VDO Oil Pressure Gauge and Oil Temp Gauges.....do you know if I would be able to tap into that same hole that you plugged into? Also do you know what the threat sizes for that hole is? And whether or not the VDO fittings would work? I am wanting to order them through www.42draftdesigns.com/ but I guess the sender threads are made for a VW....maybe. Are all Oil line/plugs and stuff pretty much universal in size? Thanks for the help...

Being loosely affiliated w/ 42, I was sent a link to your forum, and stumbled upon this thread... As far as your questions about the thread pitch on the senders (and if the senders 42 sells are the same), that oil pressure sender is identical to the one 42 sells, although that L bracket I have not seen before... It can be seen from the picture that the "pluggeed hole" on your (Evo's) oil filter flanges are significantly larger than those on our VWs, and a straight on adapter will not work either as it seems it will interfere w/ one of the front driveshafts.

For those of you who are interested in purchasing a solution from 42 with both oil pressure and oil temperature, perhaps we could look into the adapter and perhaps even include it in a special "Evo" solution

The drain plug sender however, seems to be indentical to the one we offer, but by just simply looking at a picture it is impossible to see if it infact does have M14 threads... If someone could please provide us with this info it'd be great!!

Hope this helps,

I'M SOLD

If we can figure it out I'll buy a full kit with the Boost pressure....oil pressure and oil temp with the DIN plate. You prices seem very fair on your website and I would not hesitate to buy an entire kit as opposed to buying the plate and gauges seperately...Thanks for the help!

Cool. Thanks for the pics.

I think when I do mine I'm going to run braided steel hose up to the firewall and mount the sender there. I think I've seen this on the kit Vishnu sells for their Omori set up. Too bad they've been back ordered for months.

KillaSweep: 42 has notice the interest from the Evo guys and are actively working towards making sure the senders will fit

Propellerhead: although perhaps not overly useful for the evo setup where you are not relocating two senders, just one (oil pressure)... but on the VR6 motor, there are two oil pressure and one temp senders(all factory) on the oil filter housing, thus to add the VDO senders, 42 developed the dual and triple relocation kits, which include 12" of hose w/ the correctly tapped ends, as well as either a square (triple) or rectangular(dual) distribution block with multiple tapped outputs on it... you could run a dual block w/ a blockoff in one of the holes, or run the normal VDO temp sender and place it on this distribution block instead of the oil drain plug.

Ideally, wouldn't it be best to weld a bung on to the oil pan and measure the oil in the pan? Or use the drainplug.

It just seems that the oil temp will be best measured when it is hot from exiting the internals.

Update and pics....

With the right fittings a straight adapter off the oil filter housing will work. You don't have to use an additional 90 degree like pictured above.

VDO Night Design gauges: Boost PSI, Oil Temp, and Oil Pressure.

3 holes had to be drilled into the mitsu radio blank to house the 52mm gauges. Other than that, it's plug n' play.
