A good number of evo x tcs came overfilled from the factory and some dealers got used them coming in and exchanging them under warranty.

I keep hearing of lots of weird, unpleasant defects for the X. WTF was Mitsubishi doing?

To each their own. Chief? Anyway, I'm sure it's a very low percentage of failures. I prefer 0%, but that's just me.
If you know better than the people that build these, see failure, and base technique on experience, then feel free to continue. No harm to any of us. I'm sure there's lots of stuff I do that is more than I need LOL

I also filled it through the fill hole. I had an evo 8 for 7 years changing the fluid every 5k miles. When it was time to change it again fluid would start trickling down so It was definitely full. In my X, the rear diff also fills fine through the fill hole but the transfer case does not. It has an annoying way of making you think its full, start trickling out but is nowhere near the approximately 1 quart its suppose to take. You have to stop and start several times. I will try the jacks transmission method on my next change since that would be a surefire way the transfer case gets filled with the proper amount of fluid.

i filled mine, drove around the block, then pulled the fill plug and leveled the car. it took a few seconds, but sure enough it finally started trickling out. it took a while to stop (and makes a huge mess as it drips all over everything ) but finally did. no noise, no issues. drives great.
better save than sorry, i always say. if ONE person has had issues filling via the vill hole, that's enough to keep me from doing it. they is 'spensive!

i filled my rear diff through the fill hole. the diff is very basic inside and not known to catch air bubbles, etc. if in doubt, you can always spin the wheels a bit then recheck to make sure, i suppose.

Filled my today with this method:

Place the car on 4 jackstands, high and level.

Drain T-case.

Fill T-case through fill port.

Start car and place into second gear.

SLOWLY let the clutch out and SLOWLY get the car to about 20 MPH.

Shut car off.

Re-fill T-case.

Repeat 3-4 times until full.

Remove jackstands.

I will be filling mine next week following jacks transmission method. Just seems like the best/safest method.

Exactly. No cars in gear on jack stands, no guessing, etc.
Simple.

This may help you: http://www.jackstransmissions.com/pages/t-case-filling

I recently serviced my TC using this how to. There is no reason to believe that doing it this way is dangerous, especially given that filling it through the fill hole is unreliable at best.

Here's a pic of the fitting I put together with bits from the plumbing department at Lowe's:

Thread the fitting into the drain hole and hook up the barbed end to a fluid pump. The 3/8" NPT isn't a perfect fit, but it's good enough for fluid to stay in. Be quick when you remove the fitting though, it can get messy.

The NPT will leak a little, mostly because it's hard to get the fitting tightened down (it hits the case). So be ready for a little cleanup during the fill as well.
