idk if people will agree with my tactics but i jacked the car up on a slight tilt and very very slowly pumped it in. once i had it overflow id stop and come back in like 20 mins then give it another slow pump. repeat until "full". i went up n down the street slowly (35mph) parked it then repeated the filling a hour or so later. its messy unless you are very very patient and have a full day to do it. im **** about fluid levels but you dont wanna risk something this expensive. hope this helps. i will be doing this again prob this week so maybe ill take pics and do a writeup

the best in-car method is so pump it in from the drain hole. yes, the drain LOL. drive around the block, then remove the fill plug and let the excess run out.

it is very dangerous to fill from the fill hole. it's extremely difficult to to get enough fluid in.

It can be dangerous to overfill the transfer case. I don't know if its the same in the older evos but in the evo x if you overfill your transfer case you have have most of it come back out the bleed hole as pressure builds up. Alot of people blew their tcases this way.

If they left it in, they kinda deserve it. Should have known better or left the work to someone who did.

TC doesn't take a QT of fluid. Making some dumb *** fitting to fill it through the drain hole is a waste of time and energy.

The TC takes .63 Qts. Drain it and make sure you put that much in. I fail to see the issue here.

i have heard about the drain fill but thats sketchy to me since you never know how much is really in there. it help bleed the system tho. letting it sit for a day after a short drive works too

fill it from the bottom. Less worrying and if you do it right there will be no mess or hardly any. I filled mine from the bottom after a rebuild, pumped till the fluid just started to come out the drain hole. pumping through the drain hole has multiple benefits. A: you're working against gravity so pumping from the bottom keeps the fluid level and pushing out all the air evenly. B: There is zero risk for air pockets if pumped from the bottom. C: When it has the proper amount (i.e. .63qt) it comes out the fill port. Its a no brainer for me I guess.

I used a rag wrapped around the pump end and just held it. No threading so I can pull it out fast and pop in the plug lol

Why not just fill through the fill hole and let the excess drain out? I do this every time I have to replace the fluid (same with the rear diff)

I have an adapter to fill from the drain using a hand powered pump to fit my oil bottles. Rather do it this way, drive 20 miles, and open the fill plug to let the excess drain out. This way you know you get all the fluid in all the tight spots with less chance for trapping air and getting a false level. Also its not as messy.

i used an NPT fitting. 3/8" i believe, with a barb for the tubing. worked great. i pulled off the line and capped it. then un-threaded the fitting and put the drain plug back in. i drove around the block, came back, and let the excess run out of the fill plug.
i would use a pump, but didn't have one handy, so i just ran the tubing up into the engine compartment and anchored it to the hood latch loop thing-a-majig with a funnel. i then let gravity do it's thing.

this is all per Jack's and he seems to know what he's doing.. so...

i'm glad i did the research because i was JUST about to just fill through the fill hole because, well.. that's what it's supposed to be for.

as for the rear diff, i filled that through the fill hole. there aren't spaces to trap air like the t-case has.

cliffnotes to OP: back fill from the drain plug. use a pump if you have one because it's 500% easier and less mess. 3/8 NPT fitting kinda works if you wanna try to keep it a bit cleaner.
