How To: Evo 8 Steering Wheel Spokes Black
How To: Evo 8 Steering Wheel Spokes Black
I had a spare Evo 8 steering wheel sitting around and I was bored and voila; here we are!
I didn't take my time with this at all. I was wanted to see how the end result would look so I got it all knocked out in about 30 minutes. I recommend taking your time with projects like this because more than likely you care about your steering wheel and it's the only one you have.
I also did not paint the ring around the airbag as I was planning on doing this in a Gunmetal. Well when I went looking for the gunmetal wheel paint it was nowhere to be found. You could probably just as easily paint it black with the same paint and it would look good.
The same message you've seen a thousand times applies here: I do not take any responsibility of damages if you attempt the whole or any part of this HOW-TO, if you need tips on what to clean the metal with there are MANY how-to's and different opinions on what to clean wheels and other metals with, etc etc.
Here we go:
First a parts list:
I used Black (Flat) Wheel Paint:

And 3M painters tape:

Now begin the cleaning (not shown) then taping process. Take your time with this because if you rush through this you're going to notice spots you missed later on. It's not worth it to rush. Also if it were my steering wheel that I used everyday I would probably cover EVERY part of the steering wheel that's not being painted. In this how to that is not the case, but if it is the case for you then I strongly suggest you do.

This steering wheel was stained:

You can use Masking Paper or anything else that paint is NOT going to bleed through.

Ok, let's paint. Just like every other How To you want to do light even coats. Here's my first coat.

Now onto the second coat (still keeping the coats light and even).

Now like 2 more coats later we are finished.

Now give it time to dry. Most people recommend at least an hour, but the amount of time seems to vary from person to person. After it's dry enough go ahead and remove the tape and other stuff (depending on what you used to cover the rest).

I've never been a fan of the Silver spokes so this quick and cheap process made the steeering wheel look WAY better IMO. Anyone that has questions or needs help feel free to shoot me a PM at anytime and I will be happy to help.
