There is not much to take out. Mitsu did a great job of gasket matching from the factory.

Wow nice write up.

If I buy a ix turbo with all the lines do I still have to buy the install kit? Also If I get a ix turbo without the lines will the Viii converion be all I need to install it on my 04?

Is there a power difference between the 9.8 housing and 10.5 on the IX turbo?

Thanks I just been trying to ask these all night and it seems no one can give me a straight answer. lol

Just wondering what kind of issues I'd run into installing this turbo on an Evo 4. Would I have to buy a kit to make it fit?

No, you will just need new gaskets. Oil return line gasket for sure, possibly down pipe doughnut, and most likely will not need new exhaust manifold to turbo gasket or 02housing gasket (but an option to get new while your working on it).

yes, the IX turbo will always have the potential for more power. However, you will not notice as much change if you go from the 2005 (8.5) turbo to the 9 turbo vs going from a 2003-2004 (8) turbo to 9 turbo.

Is buying a 8 turbo with the 10.5 hotside worth it? Or should I just wait and get the whole nine turbo?

do not buy a 8 turbo, just buy a 10.5 to replace your 9.8 hotside. I got one I was going to sell in Nov but can let go now if interested.

I just purchased a 10.5 hotside and the only reason I was gonna buy the 8 with 10.5 hotside is so I just install it and then sell my turbo plus it was only $100 but got the hotside for $60. Thanx

How are you supposed to bend this line? Is it long enough to clear the evo9's larger compressor housing?

And how is this piece supposed to work? The piece doesn't look like you can bend or force it to fit, but I haven't done this job to tell yet.

seeing the turbos side by side puts things in perspective. Evo 9 hot side is soooo much larger.

great write-up for all those who are curious upon the differences of an 8.5 turbo versus the 9 turbo. Even I myself have wondered and finally got the answer from this haha. Thanks!
