We use this trick at work to listen to valves to see if they are leaking through. I'm talking about high pressure fluids and steam though. I made a listening rod so I wouldn't have to put my head down close to hot lines or dirty crap. Just a 2" metal ball, hole drilled 1/4", jammed a long 1/4" rod in the hole, welded to the ball, and cut off the rod to about 2'. Works great.
Something to remember just because it's old school or not new tech doesn't mean it's not great.
