I made some notes in this thread in the Engine Management forum. Check it out.

What if any differences are there between the EVO/WRX UTEC revisions? Software and hardware..
The EVO UTEC hardware for example uses different ignition circuits, different MAF circuits and also has a significant number of additional inputs and outputs for EVO specific engine features. For example the clutch switch input is taken directly from the factory harness which means that all EVO UTECs have Launch Control as standard (the WRX required the modification of the wiring to the standard cruise control clutch switch). The EVO UTEC also has a facility for an external MAP sensor which is standard on the WRX. Obviously the EVO UTEC hardware uses the same connectors as the factory ECU and harness and the shape and layout of the board and case has been designed for the ease of installation into the EVO.
The software is based on the WRX UTEC to give it the same look and feel. However there are quite significant changes to accommodate the quite different crank and cam signals, ignition signal for example. The EVO UTEC can also use either MAF or MAP as a load indicator whereas the WRX UTEC uses only MAP. The latest WRX UTEC software supports open loop fuelling which means that the WRX UTEC actually calculates the fuel required and drives the fuel injectors independent of the factory ECU.

okay now this is a big newbie question here so bare with me.. ive been researching for days on tuning the evo and what not and comparing all the different stuff thats out, AEM, e-manage etc. now with the XEDE and UTEC, how would i tune it myself? do i need a laptop hooked up to the UTEC in order to transfer the maps? im really new to all this technical stuff so help me out here fellas.. im not really going to do much modding for my evo so im really skeptical to dishing out $1000+ on something that im never going to touch more than once
You will need a laptop to tune, download maps and save maps with the EVO UTEC. However almost any old laptop will work with the EVO UTEC as you only need to run a terminal emulation program such as Hyperterminal.
As with any form of engine management tuning it is best if you have some additional tools such as a boost gauge and an AFR Meter.
