Hey man, you can't go wrong with JL. Like Sentinal said, the W3 subs are a great line of subs, because they are very versatile and don't need loads of power. I had 2 JL 12W3 in my last car, and I'm installing 2 JL 10W3 in the Evo as we speak.....er, as we type.....I too have had many different subwoofers from Alpine and JBL to Infinity, Kicker, MTX and now JL. Nothing I've ever owned has sounded as good as the JL subs. If you've got an amp in the 1000w+ power range, look into the JLw7. Those things hit nasty hard, but they do need a lot of power.
As for your amp, I wouldn't get the Alpine amp. I would go with the Phoenix Gold over that one any day. Otherwise, get JL amps.

I also highly recommend JL components. I used to run 2 10w3's and now in the interest of saving trunk space
I run 1 10w7. I also run JL amps, which imo are freakin awesome. They have a self regulated power supply which lessens the need to run a capacitor in the system. The amps are pretty neat cause they will run the same power regardless of the impedance of the speakers they are hooked to.

your right they aren't in the same class JL sounds 10x better than punch subs do and the W7 hits WAY harder. A single W7 is capable of spl levels over 150 db and still sounds pretty clear. I used to have a fosgate system pushing about 2000 watts I now have a JL system pushing about 1000 and the JL system is 5 times better than the JL with half the watts.
