I personally like the darker color. The radio was black in that location. I do aircraft sheetmetal for a living. The fit and quality is outstanding. I could make these by hand, but for the price, its not worth my effort. Very tight fit, the gauges dont even need the clamps on the back. Like their web page says, The bezel of the gauge holds it in place. I will still put the clamps on, when I find them.......
They offer a DIN sized panel for the VW that can be used in the Evo. It is a lot cheaper than the Evo panel so some people substitute it. It;s black, so that's probably the panel he's using. According to 42, the VW panel fits, but not as perfect as their Evo panel, and it doesn't match colorwise like the Evo panel.

No, the Evo panel is black - I just got one installed as well. It looks awesome. The panel is perfectly flush. I think it would look worse color-matched...you would still have the lines present between the panel and the oem piece. I can post pics later...I love my interior now.

Professionally painted to match the EVO's interior trim, our panel is sure to be the most OEM-look gauge mount on the market. Installation is from the back of the center console and fitment is completely flush. The gauge bezels overhang the panel and are used to secure the panel to the console. No extra brackets or hardware are necessary. Fits the popular 2 1/16" (52mm) gauges. Check out the pictures below to see the new panel!
Hey what do I know, all I do is read product descriptions and look at pictures.

the panel I have is the Evo panel and its black. I prefer it that way. If you want the gray i'm sure a painter could do it. But as hardt45 says, the lines make a nice distinction. After all, the stock radio is black. To each his own.
Also note the cutouts in the gauge panel. they are matched to the Evo on the back side of the other panel where it mounts to the dash.
Someone contact 42nd and ask why if it bothers you. But the panel I ordered is the EVO specific panel and it came to me black.
