no way a stock paint job materials cost 1000 dollars. My friend just bought materials to repaint his 06 lancer and it only came to 300 dollars including all prep and buff materials. Maybe Im lucky and living really down south makes everything cheap but 2000 sounds really high to me for a stock paint job. He isnt even repainting the door jams, under hood and trunk so that should have reduced the price quite a bit as well. A candy paint job will run you around 2500 to 3000 dollars and thats with door jams included so 2000 for a stock repaint job is really expensive

Also you would be pretty surprised just how bad these "good reputation" shops take care of your car. They take up to 4 weeks to do your car. I garuantee they constantly break clips and dont care about fitting your bumpers back on properly. Make sure you check your whole car whenever you get it finished for mistakes and that everything is right.
My cousin used to work at a body shop and he has told me many bad stories that will make me think twice about getting my car painted again by a body shop.
One of my friend got his car painted and a few days after he got it back his bumper fell off and this was from a "respectable" paint shop.

The jambs, engine, bay etc. are major factors in the cost differences. Of course changing colors completely costs a lot more.
You should be able to buy all the materials for a nice pearl paint job using House of Kolor pearls, and standard quality everything else down to the sandpaper for about $600 in materials at online retail, and that's for a LOT of coats.
The major difference is also in the labor. If you have dings etc. that need to be smoothed out this adds labor time and cost.
I have seen some very nice color-change paint jobs that cost about $2000 to $2500 where you couldn't tell the car had ever been a different color, and very nice re-paints for about $1200-1500.
No, you don't have to strip it down to the bare metal. Of course it wouldnt hurt but most places don't, and most people don't want to pay for it, since it is a TON or work.
