Taming the Roar of the Beast
Yeah, if you want a really quiet car, get a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. Duh. But let's say that you can't live like you're castrated and you have an IX MR (stock).
What can we do to quiet the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) characteristics of our cars without adversely affecting performance?
1) Is it worth it to take the doors apart and spray sound insulation? Anyone tried this?
2) A quieter (yet freer flowing than stock) exhaust seems elusive also.
3) Active sound cancellation technology would be great but no one seems to make this yet.
There must be a way . . .

First off why is this in "Show and Shine" ??
Honestly you bought a semi race preepped car. It has Stiff suspension your going to feel every bump, unlike in a Lexus LS600 where the purpose is comfort. There are no luxury items in the car. Its meant to be driven, not taken on road trips. Doubt Lotus Exige owners are asking this same question either.. Adding all that crap to the car would be a waste in my opinion.. but thats just my $.02

Sounds like someone went shopping for an Evo when they should have went shopping for a CTS-V...
You picked the Evo. You realize they make a gutted out version of this car... that is already devoid of amenities and luxuries... available factory direct for your consumption?
You bought the wrong car if you have ANY concern for NVH. This car has one of the loudest drivetrains on the planet.

Rip out the interior and spend a good chunk of time dynomatting. It's long, hard, and time consuming later but after a lot of blood (yeah i didn't use gloves for awhile haha) and sweat it will be worth it because the noise gets cut in half depending on the surface area you covered. I did a 65' bug.
Hell yeah, that is personality of the beast. And why I have not gone to a X. Hell i ripped out the interior in the bisch to make it have even more road noise, and the whining walbro. Love it. gets my adrenaline pumping thinking about it.

You would also want to get softer motor/tranny mounts to eliminate some of the vibration. And getting some highway tires will do wonders for the road noise. Soft mounting the seats would help too I would guess (some sort of rubber bushing, probably need to be custom). You can also get the thermal blanket to wrap the turbo and DV to muffle some of that noise. Maybe new injectors to get rid of the idle clicking. The hardest thing would probably be the wind noise, but you could try a regular lancer windshield (slightly thicker), remove the wing, and dynamat inside the roof and doors etc like was already suggested. And some Airtabs to put along all the leading edges (A pilar, front of fenders, etc.) to smooth out the wind. And you can get some of those fancy noise canceling headphones and drive around with those on, my bro picked up a set back when he was commuting by plane a lot. The options are endless really

It drives like any other 4 door econobox, be realistic and remove the "Race Prepped" garbage.

For anyone interested - I think the goal of light weight and acoustic improvement can be had:

E-A-R is a specialty composites company for 3M. 3M makes Thinsulate, which is supposed to be the highest noise attenuation to weight material around.
The case study described on E-A-R's website is pretty close to my design goals.
