Evo IV GSR Restore/Revive

Hey all,

So I have recently gotten myself an old evo IV. She definitely ain't in the best condition (as you will see in the photos to come)...

Bit of background: earliest record was from 2003 in England. Apparently she had 3 owners until a change in 2012 where it was taken to Germany. And now she is in my hands You could say she has been around the block a bit Also somewhere along the line about 10k miles ago a evo 6 was dropped in ..

At the moment I'm focussing on getting the basics of the car all in the green.

I dont have any plans to turn it into a big HP monster, but who knows lets get it all sweet and clean first

The list of things need to be done:

- Oil/Oil filter
- Radiator (needs a good clean - see in the picture below... )
- Droplinks front (im thinking as well rear while im at it)
- Tie rod ends
- front strut top bearings
- Oil pan needs a reseal
- Rear shocks need replacing
- Tidy up the cabling
- Rust spots
- Other random bits to be discovered while carrying the above...

Nothing beats pictures (excuse the pictures using mobile phone cam atm.. need to get myself a better camera)

This is the boot... oh my... Apparently one of the owners decided to rigged up some hectic audio stuff in the boot and to get it sounding right they like filled the spare wheel space with building foam and used that aluminium sound cladding and on top of that they used 1/2" thick MDF board (its heavy).. that crap is all going out

All the insulation ripped out:

I then used a drill with a wire brush and rubbed the rust down, and put some rust sealer/preventer on it.

Other spots that are need of tender love..

Looks like during its life.. someone decided artistically to use a screwdriver to try and break into the car...

A look into the radiator reveals.. *gulps*

That requires some good flushing and replacement of the proper coolant.

Space is a bit small in my mates workshop, more pics to come soon.

Evo 6 engine is a very good thing. Evo's 1-4 had massive crank walk issues.

Hello hello!

Sorry for being away, going to work during the day then working at night on the car hasn't left me much time to be on the computer. Today is a rest day

@ Scotty_R8: Yo nice! ya I'm based down in the south near munich. Is your one grey with red mud flaps/black rims? I think there was IV for sale around that side of Germany.

@ Jush: Yeah.. that was actually a bit of a factor that concerned me a bit.. I heard people get crankwalk with even forged components :/

@ slatetar: Nice dude!

Ok onto the photos...

There she is, the paint is a sort of pearl with green-bluish tint The car was originally gsr gray. The paint is not in the best shape to be honest, it needs a good polish or respray.. we shall see...

To the boot:

Sanded and then rust protection/sealer.

Next.. 5 light coats of zinc spray

From the paperwork I received, it looks like the car has seen 10 years here in Europe and unfortunately.. the salty roads has taken its toll. Not too bad but nevertheless needs a needs a sand down and some rust protection and respray.

In the third picture, you can see the downpipe has taken a bump... nothing critical but things that annoy me ey. Also not so easily recognisable is the intercooler has also taken a bit of a bump.. one of the ribs has been pressed together. I don't know how easy it will be to find an original intercooler... I was looking around and was thinking to fit a Forge one in (anyone else fitted a different intercooler in there IV?)

I just finished last night paint sealer underneath. The next stage will be to zinc spray the rust spots then black bitumen...

If it helps any intercooler made for a 4-6 will work but 7-9 won't.

I had an issue with mine because of the location of the tow point being above the intercoolers lowest point so it had a nice dent..

Thanks for the tip! I think quite a few of the parts from the 4-6 are interchangeable. What I find rather interesting is the variation in price for a intercooler... like a cheaper no brand you pay around 200-300 bucks.. on the other end of the spectrum a blitz or greddy you pay up to and an excessive of 1k Just gotta keep my eyes peeled and see if I find something second hand in good condition.

Ok so the previously sanded and sealed rust spots have now been covered with zinc spray.

Next step will be to cover the zinc sprayed spots with underbody sealant/tar. Wanted to get some after work yesterday but the local store didn't have any.. have to wait until Friday.

I noticed the rocker cover seals were not doing there job..

So off it comes for a clean...

And new seals

The cams and springs are looking ok, not pitting or any gunk.

Rocker cover now nice and clean

Now onto the boot lid, as I mentioned previously.. one of the previous owners decided to have some epic sound stuff in the back... and glued all this sound cladding.. I managed to get it down with the hot air gun and some good old elbow grease...

But the residual glue.. that is a pain in the ___ to get off.. I have removed as much as possible, but it aint clean... I will let it dry out a bit for now.. maybe sand it back a bit then mask it up and zinc spray the inside...

Front right, replaced the drop link, tie end and lower arm. That was a bit of slog... the 10 years of salty european roads, making removing stuff a darn pain in the... but its ok its done now

Next step will be the left side.

Ok so the left front side has also been done. Fresh droplinks, tie rod ends and new lower arm.

Just incase if someone mentions something the punch was there temp... had to get a new nut. The old one was worn out...

The underseal is now complete (I would say 90%-ish), should keep the chassis well protected enough for the upcoming winters and years to come.

Things on the AYC pump were exactly clean, gave it a good scrubbing.

Rear bumper is going back on.. the bumper strut and carrier were completely rusted. Got a fresh set and using stainless screws this time, hopefully it will last longer.

The front top mounts have been replaced with OEM for now, I think later on when I get other coilovers shall get a pillow ball top mount. The two dampers in the front from GAZ are on there way out, I might sit it out a bit for a year first before going another route.

Now the next move will be the rear...
