40psi a risk? or, just a backache?

Like many other posters, the dealership filled the tires of my evo (RS) to 46psi. I didn't notice this until after driving it 2000 miles. I immediatly decreased the pressure to 37f/35r (after reading posts about others doing the same thing). However, I prefer how the car drove with 46psi....it seemed to handle much better and the stearing was much more responsive and quick....I didn't mind the harsher ride at all. I would love to fill em back up to 46psi, but the max is 44 according to the sidwall (as you already know). What are the risks of 46psi? What about 40 all the way around?? Would that be risky or harmfull to the tires or car in any way whatsoever? (Keeping in mind that mitsu suggests 29f/31r or something like that).

Thanks!

I actually had my tires with too much pressure too and drove around for awhile, I do notice a change in handling now that ive turned them down but I don't think its that good for the tires.

As long as you don't exceed the tires MAX psi your fine. I also wouldn't use anything less than the recommended pressure from the vehicle manufacture.

Remember that max pressure is cold. They will gain once you drive the car even a little.

Good point. If I set them to 40psi, is it reasonable to think the psi would rise over 44psi when driven?

Thanks,
Chris

Set mine at 38psi around. tire wear is better and so is handling.

humm...38 sounds pretty good. For how many miles have you been at 38? Would you dare to try 40? -Chris

My Yokos lasted me 19K till my inner tread went down to 2/32. So It was good it lasted that long on 38 psi.

Had it alinged every 6 months also helped in tire wear.

I was reading something about tire wear and gas mileage a while ago, I don't remember where I found it so please don't as. But it was suggested that you run your tires at the max reccomended pressure for better handling, tire wear and gas mileage. The first thing I did was in crease my tires to 40 psi all around and noticed a positive difference, now I check them often to maintain 40 psi.

Just watch out for excessive wear in the center of the tire.
