Need help on Brake Pad choice....
Need help on Brake Pad choice....
Hey guys need some help. I have the dreaded brake and shake syndrome going on with my steering wheel during light braking that alot of other Evo owners are having. I have about 32k miles and need to get pads anyway. Then with the new pads I will bed them and hopefully that will take care of any rotor surface build-up, and stop the shaking madness. (hopefully it's not the rotors)
For those of you running aftermarket pads can I get some feedback on your experience with them? I have never tracked my car, I want to but never have time. So I don't need real aggressive pads. Just for city/highway driving. I can't stand squeling brakes, so I want something with no noise and also less brake dust would be great. Also the cheaper the better, again I am not looking to set any braking records, but I am not getting autozone pads either!

I haven't tried them yet, but I'm getting Ferodo DS2500s. From what I've heard, they are the best cost/performance balance. They're supposed to be like stock for daily driving, but they handle high temp better than stockers so they do much better at the track. Also, they used them on the SSC Project Evo, and their reviews were very positive. I've heard bad things about the other brands (i.e. Hawk).
I got mine from Lancershop.com. I'll let you know how I like them once they're installed.

I have the Endless SS-S pads and I'm very pleased with them. I believe they're comparable to the Ferodos in terms of performance. They dust less than stock too
Two things though: bedding in is essential (as with any new pad) and installation is important in that you MUST grease the backs of the pads properly or they will squeak like mad. I heard the Endless pads are pretty sensitive to that, and I had to re-do my install because I didn't use the copper grease recomended here on the forums. I got my Endless pads through WORKS

Here's a handy how to thread:

Use exactly the same copper antisieze the author recommends. My brakes are quiet because of it!

I have been using Endless SSS on both street and track. They hold up okay for me since I am not too harsh on my brakes. However, I will be upgrading them to CCX when I wear these ones out. I need something more aggressive for the track.

Hawk HPS....very streetable, no noise if you use factory shims. There's a massive groupbuy on the vendor forum and it's a killer deal. If you at least autocross, I would go with HP+, as suggested a good crossover for track and street would be DS2500 or Endless SSS or CCX pads.
But before you even buy, try rebedding your current pads to fix your shakes...you'll be surprised. good luck.

How long should the stock pads last? I have never autocrossed or tracked my car. Most of my 32k miles are just Interstate miles driving to and from work. So I have never really been hard on my pads.
It changes greatly from car to car. And your driving style.
My type of driving my pads were deon at 24k. This is with some light track days and sprited weekend drives.
Best bet is to check them every time or every other time you change your oil. With the open wheel design of the EVO it is normally pretty easy to see the pad life. But be careful because the outside pad could have alot of life on it and the inside one could be shot.
We recommend the DS2500 as a upgrade. They seem to dust less then OEM and have a great inital bite and don't fade as quickly when overheated. Great all around pad.

I have the DS2500s and have been very happy with them. For daily driving they are at least as good as the stock pads (don't need to be warmed to work properly). They don't seem to dust any more than stock, although I can't say for sure that they dust any less either. On the track they held up great. I never had any problems with brake fade and my calipers are now brown due to the heat generated during my last track day with the DS2500s.
