17x9 wheels best tires?

Im looking into buying 17x9 wheels...After doing my search for the best tire size, I notice most ppl run 255/40/17 and not 255/45/17 is there a reason for this? rubbing issue maybe?

The main difference is overall tire diameter and gearing, also tire availability. The 255-40 is an inch smaller in diameter than a 255-45.

wouldn't that make the overall appereance of the rim smaller? since the rim is lower profile....

I have 245 45 and its slammed, no way would a 255 45 fit without rubbing.. maybe your unaware that as the side wall size is in a certain ratio to the width.. so a 265 45 is much taller then a 235 45. I didnt know that before either. Id like to go with a 265 and have the fenders rolled.

I think the 245/40/17 is a better size. I've read abouit ppl putting on the 255/40/17 tires without problems, but I don't know what pppl consider "trouble free..". On another note, Car and Driver just ran a tire comparo ... Very interesting, the Good Year F1 came in a clear first and interestingly, a Hankook tire came in very high. The Kumho MX came in dead last and other high name tires did not do so well either....

well the rims will be wider 17x 9 not 17x 8 so I know 255 will be good rather than 245....

I would put 245 45 at a maximum. Any wider and cornering may suffer due to the sidewalls not being straight up and down in relation to the wheel. They start to angle out towards tread. As far as tires I like the Goodyear F1 GS-D3 for street use. Great tires. I had them on my mustang and they were great even in down pours. Tirerack has them for $165 each. Good price as well.

Well the wheels are 17 x 9 which are an inch wider than stock, and most ppl that get 17 x 9 run 255/40/17 from my search. I haven't seen anyone run 235 on wider rims.....
