i know its a pretty big phobia on this site but ive had alot of experience with this sort of thing... (prior fbody owner)
the recommended width for a 255/40 tire is 8.5-10" if you push the recommended range by .5" (.25" on either side) its not extreme at all, and wont cuz uneven tire wear, failure or "lots" of sidewall flex etc etc.

Yeah I too have experience I worked at a tire shop. Having a tire too wide will "cuz" the tire to wear out in the center tread. 235 is the right width for 8" wheels, but the 245s are within spec, the 255s are just too much for the 8" rim. If the tire is too wide it will push out on the edges of the tires which when taking a turn the car will increase the pressure put on the edge of the tire and those two factors together will cause the side wall to be softer then normal.

I've seen more than one instance where 255/40s are used on the stock 8" wheel. I was expecting to see the sidewall being pulled in toward the wheel, but it's not the case. The sidewall was squared up nicely with the rim. It's weird, but I've seen it with my own eyes. Guys run Toyo RA-1s, 255/40s on stockers a lot for track days …

i dont think so, its been done without problems for years.
ive run 275, 285 section width tires on a 9" rim many times. 255 on an 8" is hardly extreme, out of spec yes, but hardly extreme. its not going to cup the contact patch or cause that much underolling of the sidewall as you are portraying.
but ur the expert since you mounted tires at a tire shop.\
im not disagreeing that 235 is the ideal matched up size, but i am disagreeing to the statement that a 8" rim cannot handle a 255 width tire safely or with major side effects.
now to unjack the thread... anyone have pics?

OMG and you drove FBody cars.... OMFG
If you run 255 on 8inch wheel in normal driving for the life of a 20-25k tire then you will see the center of the tires wearing faster. I not only worked at a tire shop, but ive been around cars my whole life and learned alot from experience.
Stop talking **** ***!
