I have used Hawk pads before and I love them. Once my stock pads wear out I will use the Hawk HPS because I love the intial bite they give over the OEM.

Are these pads street / race? What do they do to the rotors?

They are nice street pads - quiet and clean with good stopping.

From Hawks website:

http://www.hawkperformance.com/performance/ceramic.php

Ultimate stopping power in an ultra-low dust, low noise ceramic compound!

Hawk Performance has introduced a premium, high performance, ultra-low dust, low noise compound called Performance Ceramic.

Performance Ceramic is engineered to reduce brake NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness), creating a quieter performing brake pad. Furthermore, the ceramic brake pad formula has a linear friction profile that allows your ABS brake system to work more effectively. With Performance Ceramic you can expect reduced brake pad wear, lower dust output levels and a rotor-friendly brake pad.

Performance Ceramic – quiet, clean & fast stopping!

Key Features:

* Increased stopping power
* Increased rotor life
* Extended pad life
* Ultra-low dust
* Extremely quiet
* Stable friction output

How well do they hold up to the occasional canyon run?

after having them bedded-in, VERY WELL. . .defintley better than stock pads for sure, and combined with less noise and better wear, I'm not sure why we're all not running them. . .and Ken from EVOBrakes is A+ with customer service and support, get these pads from him, amazing prices and good feedback!

Sounds like a great all-around street combo. Tempted to dump my near new OEM pads just so I can have less dust.

i run these pads and swapped out the stock rotors for brembo cross drilled and vented rotors, and these things are mean. great bite, even better after they heat up. but after they heat up some they do howl under light braking. not often enough to annoy me though. i definitely plan on sticking with these pads/rotors for as long as i have the car.

mine are loud as f*ck. but thats probably because I bed them in just driving around on the street. they do stop on a dime though when they get heated up. much better than stock imo, but if I were to buy pads now, I would probably try the project mu ns street pads because I've heard a lot of good things about them.

I just spent a bunch of time w/ an STi trying to quiet his down. He has HPS - gets some mean squeal from the right front but only at light braking when he gets below about 15MPH.

We tried putting the stock fiber shim over the Hawk shim with CRC in between etc. And I bedded them hard - still pretty persistent. Next we'll try adding the angled shim w/ the arrow to - see if that changes anything. I'd like to be able to find a combination of shims or grease or something that quiets those down.

His were noisy after install in the summer - but a track day made them quiet - but when the weather changed last week - cool and wet - the noise came back a little.

His isn't crazy loud but louder than my HP+ in my Subaru 4 pots.

So far pretty much every pad seems to make noise in those calipers - in which case I'd go ahead and run HP+ or soemthing - if they are gonna squeal yo umight as well get more friction.

It's also strange that many of them don't squeal at all.

Yeah, when mine aren't heated up they squeal at lower temperatures, but as they get hotter, they progressively squeal at higher speeds, including in excess of 70mph. I also re-used the stock shim and tried a agressive bedding process, but to no avail. The guy at the local tire and brake shop told me that the squealing was due to the fact that these brakes are larger than stock and when the brakes are applied, the pad rubs up against the rust guard on the rotor, causing the loud howling, but it's possible that this is completely incorrect because I'm sure that those guys haven't had much experience with evo's.

I would suggest getting your brakes done elsewhere if that is what he thinks.

I posted a paper a PHD wrote on brake squeal - it's technical and boring but basically it has no ill affects other than the noise - and it is difficult to stop if the conditions exist to excite the system at that frequency.

One of the number 1 complaints o fSUV buyers is brake noise - squeal, low speed grumble etc. When I worked at the GM Desert Proving grounds in AZ I watched the brake engineers who were working on the then new GMT800 (GM truck). They must have tested hundreds of pads/rotors/shims - all to just try and make less noise. So it's not really a problem per se - but it is annoying at times.

I'd still say big Brembo's are worth it though - they do feel great and can take a lot of punishment. Better noise than crappy brakes that don't stop and fade right away.

We tried a few more combinations of shims tonight - and stock pads back and forth. Lets just say were still looking for a potential combination that works better to quiet them down..
