I read on I think Tire Rack about tire shaving offered for racing tires. I was curious if maybe that will solve the problem with my tires. Is this process safe?

If so:

Does anyone know a local South Florida shop that shaves tires.

 

The advantage of tire shaving is to create more stable tread blocks. Stable being the rubber blocks do not move as much. By shaving the tire, it can generate more grip. The disadvantage is shorter tread life. This is how I understand it.

 

Its safe, what problems are you having?

 

Actually, I got my RA1's shaved, and they actually LAST LONGER! I had them worn down to "bald", and they gripped like they were new!! Shaving is much better then not. If you don't shave them, heat cycle them. your problem (I bet) is with uneven tire wear on the innermost surface of the tires,and NO, shaving won't solve that problem.

 

If you buy them from TireRack, they will shave them before they ship them, won't they?

We will only shave tires that are fresh and from our stock only. Unfortunately we do not take in other people's tires and shave them. We also can't shave a used tire as there is too much debris left in them (have broken lathe blades before trying to shave tires that have gravel embedded in them). Remember that if you have a tire with uneven wear, is cupping, etc tire shaving will not fix it. You cannot repair irregular wear, it can only be prevented.

 

I've heard that before, but still have a hard time believing it.

Swap the tires on the wheel before you cord the inside and have fresh tread on the outside.

Rotating during an event is helpful too

 

The problem is 2 chunks of rubber missing from each front tire. Causeing a bad ride down the road. I hit an uneven part of the road where they paved some and not the reat and it hit it pretty hard.

 

On that note, if you actually go to tirerack.com, click tires, search by size (as most of us do, example 255/40/17), check the box for comp tires, they don't have the option anymore for shaving OR heat cycling....i'd say wtf...or is it just a fluke with the tire selection?
