Brake upgrade for Evo IV

I know most of you guys are VIII and IX owners, but I figured someone may be able to help me with this. My Evo IV has standard brakes, and I've been told I can upgrade to OEM Brembos from an Evo VI or later. Does anyone know what all is involved with the install? Is it simply a bolt on affair? Should I change anything else (perhaps master cylinder?) since I'll be going to larger front and rear brakes?

Thanks!
Jason

Im not sure if they are straight bolt-on or not. But you could do some junkyard shopping and try to find a 3000GT VR4, or a diamante for at least the fronts.
I have some 3000GT VR4 F&R calipers that Im holding onto until I can get some VR4/Diamante hubs so I can throw them on my Mirage.
It's not necessary to upgrade the master cylinder, but it would increase the volume of fluid being pushed to the larger brakes. The Evo 5/6 MS is .3mm larger bore than the 4, and Im not sure how large the VR4 MS is but it must be a fairly large size since it's working in conjunction with 4pot fronts & 2 pot rears that are almost as large as the 5/6 Brembos.

It's a straight bolt on job - your brakes are the same as those fitted to RS Evos.
The GSR/MR Brembo rotors and calipers should be just a bolt on job.
No need to change the master cylinder - what you have will be fine.

I am looking to buy a set of rotors and calipers from an RS Evo or an Evo 4 because they fit inside 15" rims which is ideal for gravel rallying. If you decide to sell yours, let me know.

Sure, that would help to at least offset the cost of the brake upgrade a little. PM me with how much you were thinking of offering for all 4.

I should be buying my new wheels/tires/brakes here in the next couple weeks, so I'll keep you posted.

The biggest hassle with fitting the brembos onto evo4's is the wheel seleciton.

As the evo4 doesn't have the wider guards like the evo5,6 you will run into problems with finding wheels that will fit over the calipers AND fit under the guards.
The simple solution is to get the wheels off an evo5,6 as these fit over the calipers and just fit under the guards.

If you don't mind running spacers then ignore what I just said as that problem only applies if you don't want to run spacers.

One other problem that will come up is the rear dust shield, as it is meant for a smaller disc it will touch the larger and thicker disc meant for the brembo caliper, a bit of trimming and it will be fine.

If you have any more questions just ask as i've done this conversion myself with my old evo4.

To Rallyman:
You may want to check the clearances as the GSR evo4 uses a larger disc than the RS evo4, i'm not 100% sure if a 15" wheel will fit over the front evo4 GSR brakes.

What about Evo VIII MR BBS's? Will they fit the IV with some 215/40/17's and Brembos?

Some people have used evo7-9 wheels with that tyre size.

Its not something I like though as when my folks had an evo8 I tired one of their evo8 wheels on my evo4 and found that the wheel sticks out about 6mm from the rear guard which means you would have to run at the very least a factory ride height and not carry any passengers or you will get lots of rubbing, if you are game you could try pulling the rear guard out, it does fit fine on the front though.

Like I said in my previous post, if you want the no hassle wheel choice then evo5,6,6.5 will go straight on.

Ok, thanks, I'll do some hunting around for 5,6,6.5 wheels on Yahoo Japan Auctions.

I know if I owned / worked on any EVO below an 8, I would be questioning these men here:
