wheel spacer question!!

I have old school volk gtu's in 17x8 and 17x9. im running the 17x9 in the front as i was told to do by people on here. anyways i am not clearing the front caliper the rear is fine. the offset of the 17x9 is 44 anyone know what size spacer i might need and should i put a spacer on the rear to just to keep it even, also do you think i will need extended lugs??

There's no way to know what spacer you need with the information that you've given. It depends on the shape of the wheel. Your best bet is to go to Home Depot, buy a bunch of washers that will fit over the wheel studs and keep adding them until the wheel fits the way you want. Then measure how far out those washers are spacing the wheel. You will undoubtedly need longer studs unless you use a bolt-on spacer like a Project Kics spacer.

I used a 5mm spacer with the stock studs, it works fine. I just needed a little clearance to clear the calipers with my rims. i wouldn't go any higher than 5mm with the stock studs.

There is no functional reason to have equivalent spacing/offset front and rear. In fact the car will handle better with a wider front track width. I'm surprised that the tire isn't hitting the control arm with a +44 offset in the rear and a 9" wheel. I would have expected that you would need at least a 5 mm spacer back there with a 255.

the rear is only an 8in rim maybe that is why i am not sure maybe i will order a 5mm spacer for the rear just to be sure!

I didn't realize they were 8s in the back. If you don't need a spacer, don't use one. FWIW, when H&R sells 5 mm spacers, they include studs that are 5mm longer than the stock studs, so evidently they don't think it's a good idea to just slap on a 5mm spacer without changing the studs.

re bumping this old thread with a new question.

soo if i run a 10mm space in the front and nothing in the back, that would be a staggered setup and isnt that bad for awd cars?

No as long as the tire width is the same all around...

For Example it wont be good for the center diff if you ran 235 up front and 245 in the rear...

I could be wrong... bump

The issue with the diffs is having the same height tire. Width and offset (including spacer differences) doesn't matter. It's perfectly fine to have a different track width front and rear.

Do the washer thing I suggested if you aren't sure. Unless you find someone with the exact same wheels (brand/model/width/offset/tire choice), then you can't follow what someone else did just because they had the same offset. The shape of the wheel spokes matters as much as the offset of the wheel.
