Wheel locks

I'm getting some wheel locks sent to me. You have to hand bolt them on, right?

Yes, it's just a lugnut with a key.

...And yes, I think it would be foolish not to add wheel locks. They're inexpensive and I don't doubt those Enkei wheels are very desirable to a passing criminal.

I have a set of Volk wheels, so wheel locks are things to have.

It is probably the best $30 investment you can make to your car. I am surprised the dealer let you leave the lot without them.

I can take a wheel lock off just as easy as a lugnut.
Any good criminal out to get wheels will have the necessary tools.
Kind of like immobilizers. I have seen Corvettes with the VATS system stolen. I don't know how the hell they did it but they did.

No doubt though, they are good for the common thug who is usually stupid like most criminals.

Oh and what do you mean by hand bolting them on?
If you are talking an impact gun, you should put lugnuts on that way either.

They were out of stock when I picked my car up. The dealer is 7hrs away, so he had them sent to me when they got more in.

They are good to have, and I don't know what timzcat is talking about, but if you loose the key it will take a shop a couple of hours to break a wheel lock off.

You can buy a tool and take them off in no time. You hammer it over the outside and it grips the sides and removes it. Used to have one at my old job. Plus if you lose the key, just order a new one.

I learned a hard lesson with my old eclipse which came with wheel locks. I've got them on my EVO and I'm glad I came across this thread. I'm definitely placing an order for another key just to have as a spare.

The problem is...shops out there aren't supposed to use the air guns with the key. And I've seen them use it.

they strip rather easily.

I attempted a brake job once on my eclipse and sure enough, the key was stripped as soon as I tried to remove the lock.

It is nice to have a spare...especially if you get a flat!

Have some of the Mitsu ones, but I change rims so often due to autocrossing that I don't use them. The RPM2's came with splined lugs, so thats about as secure as I feel like getting for daily use. If someone really wants your rims, they are going to get em.

As for the lugs... spin them on with air impact on lowest setting, then use a torque wrench to manually tighten. Always use anti-sieze on the lugs.

I have a set of Mcgard locks & a spare key I keep at home in my tools. The original key is nylon tied to a metal brace behind the glove box (needles to say the locks aren't worth much if they find the key). May not be perfect protection but better than nothing.
