coilover helper springs
coilover helper springs
How critical are the helper springs. I did not install the helper springs of my ohlins on the front suspension because they were rubbing against my tires. I'm runnning 17x9 35 offset with 255/40's.
I'm about to do some suspension work and was wondering if it would be better to put the helper springs back on and either use some wheel spacers or buy a different set of rims with a different offset.
If there is no need than i'll just leave it the way it is.
Looking for all the input i can get.
thanks

Really depends on how much droop you have and whether your springs get unseated/loose contact with the spring perches during full droop (extension). If they loose contact with the spring perches then it is a good idea to have helper springs. This is usually a problem for coilovers that control ride height, spring preload and shock travel using the lower spring perches ...
If they came with helpers in the front, I assume they are not the newer DFV model which are dual height adjustable. If that's the case you really should use the helpers. With a single height adjustable damper there is a very narrow range of height adjustability before you begin to affect preload. The helpers not only maintain spring to perch contact at full droop, they also allow you to adjust ride height without preloading the main springs.

Doesn't the helper spring help damping out the little bump on the streets so that you'll have a smoother ride?
Can you install the helper springs on the bottom instead of the top?

No, they only help when the shock is at full droop.
It wouldnt change much to mut them on the bottom or top, so do it as the instrusctions say.
You're thinking of tender springs, which do have a little bit of rate and soften the initial rate of the overall spring. They're used, but can complicate things. Stick with helper springs.
