Installed pads and rotors...need HELP!!

i put dba 4000 series slotted rotors and hawk hps pads...we only did the front and i went to go drive it and it now seems like the brakes are "ON" when i start to move...almost like when you drive with your ebrake or something. We also noticed little shavings on the inside wheel...do they need to break in that much that they actually feel like its stopping when you start moving...or is something wrong?

You could try adjusting the master cylinder rod behind the brake pedal back a bit... err assuming this exists on the evos. It's there on my Eclipse and I've had to play with it before.

bump?

You got sound advice there - recheck everything.

Sounds like you did it wrong. Check the 2 caliper bolts for correct torque (80 ft/lbs) and make sure the pads are in correctly.

And...no there should be no friction (well noticable) from the pads unless your foot is on the brakes.

alright so i left the car at the house we were doing the installation on...he's gonna take it apart again tomorrow and look at everything...but has this happened to anyone after changing rotors and pads?
is it supposed to feel tight and after you drive they break in and feel normal...the scraping i know isn't normal but hopefully tomorrow we can figure it out.

ignore this advice I have no idea what he's talking about and neither does he.

if you have little shavings that's a bad sign, sounds like you may have installed 1 of the pads backwards, metal side toward the rotor.

or you could have:

put the calipers on the wrong side of the hub. (this would be really really bad)

to much fluid in the resevior causing the pistons to not retract properly

pads on backwards (also really bad)

just go over and check everything twice! some pictures could help us narrow this down a bit more.

good luck!

Check that you didn't forget the washer on one of the caliper bolts. It's just long enough to contact the rotor.

Forgot to update but the next day my friend took it back apart when i was at work...and dave (2 posts up) you got it right...he forgot to put the washer back in. Which then made the bolt just slightly rub on the inner circle of the rotor which is where i was getting the shavings from. But when my friend was taking it back apart he also noticed that the bolt in the caliper got cross threaded so the cars been at his house for the passed couple days. Hopefully tomorrow i can borrow my friends tap and die set to re-thread everything and get this thing back.
