Can anyone tell me the advantages of gas shocks vs oil. I really don't know much about oil shocks other then they exist. What would be better for a high performance application?

According to this, most shocks have oil in them, be they air or gas.

 

I can give you a half-assed answer. Gas, but I dunno why.

My friend asked the same question for his jeep the other day. Unfortunately I was drunk when he was telling me about it. Needless to say I remember nothing of last saturday.

The different between gas and oil shock, the gas are use to increase the temp of the oil ( just like the radiator cap in you car ). the higher pressure inside the more temp it will take. Also there have two type of gas charge shocks , one is twin tube gas (KYB AGX , KONI, and Tein HA...etc). These shock just like the conventional oil shock but they put like 100 or more psi gas inside the oil to increase the perforamce. The other are mono tube ( Bilstein, Ohlins , Dynamic, ...etc) have different construction , they have another piston to separate the oil and gas. So the oil and gas never mix, it end up more have perforamce and more longer life. So that why all of the rally or F1 use these type of shock for there car. one more good thing about the mono tube are they cool down much faster than the twin tube.

 

What about the Tokico Gas shocks. I have those on both of my cars. They are the blue ones. I am pretty sure they are not adjustable so they are not the illuminati.

 

tokico blue are gas charge shock, but they just put less pressure of gas and use less agressive piston and valve stacks. These shock are design for OEM replacement not must about real performance mind.
