One easy way to tell if you have a bad wheel bearing is to jack the car up so the wheel is off the ground, then grab the tire at 12 o'clock and at 6 o'clock, and try to shake the wheel (i.e. = push at 12, pull at 6, and vice versa). If you get any excessive movement, I would replace the bearings. Check all the wheels.

A bad wheel bearing starts to make a whirring, groaning kind of noise. At first, it will only be when that bearing is under increased load, i.e., the on outside wheel of a turn. If it does this when turning, but not when straight, thats a pretty clear sign. If it does it all the time, its either a totally shot bearing or something else, like a bad differential, gearbox , etc.

Sounds like the lf wheel bearing which is quite common to go bad on these cars, I have replaced both sides in my car and it has only got 46k on it.

The wheel bearings on the Evo are apart of the hub assembly. You have to buy a whole assembly, you cannot just get a bearing. Around $180-200 for the assembly.
