Stupid coilover question....

Ok, so I am new to coilovers, and realize that what I am experiencing might be common with all coilovers...but I am annoyed.

So, everytime I stop I hear a popping sound from the front. I am assuming this is the springs, but am not 100%. I was thinking of getting some Torrington bearings, but don't knot if this would help the issue at all.

BTW, the coilovers we're talking about are the Gerrard-Spec Ohlins set to the proper ride height....they aren't some super-slammed, dumpy-boyz cheap Chinese units.

Torrington bearings reduce popping noises from the spring binding, usually during low speed parking lot turns and stuff.

Ohlins do not use the best camber plates (not terrible, but not that great) and it sounds like yours are a little old as it is, so that's what I would lean towards. Was there a lot of play in the bearing?

That's not good to hear at all Andrew. You would think with what these coilovers cost, the camber plates would be up to par.

True, but since he's got the older R&T version of the Ohlins I can assume the plates are a couple of years old at this point and could have seen some intense use.

The old Ohlins were made in Japan to Sweden's specs....but the plates were essentially standard no frills JDM camber plates similar to Cuscos IIRC. Again, not bad and they get the job done, but not as good as say Vorshlags.

The camber plates that came with this set-up are the Works units. Have no idea how those are. Besides the popping issue (ordered Torrington bearings yesterday...you'd think they would make a sealed unit, so you wouldn't have to replace them as often), I am getting a large rattle from the right rear of the car. Could that be a camber plate issue?

Andrew, I know there was some play in the OEM spherical bearing at the hub/knucke (the arm the rear shock mounts to), but that was on the opposite side that the rattle is coming from.

What makes the Vorshlag pieces nice?

LOL @ all this annoyance. If I were to do things over again, I would have replaced the OEM rear spherical bearings (there are 4 of them) when I got the urethane bushings in...nothing is more annoying than having to go back and take things apart after you've already been in there. If anyone is going to put a new suspension on their car...seriously, just do everything at once or don't do it at all (re: bushings, etc.) That way everything is new, and you won't be annoyed like me. And oh yeah, get Torrington bearings unless you like to hear your über-nice suspension make all sorts of noises. This car already has enough noises...I am beginning to learn the lesson of trade offs in the whole street car versus race car concept.

Not annoying at all if you ask me. Attention to detail and wanting everything running as good as it possibly can is what I aim for in everything. You seem to be the same. And yes, I know there are trade-offs but I feel when you pay particular attention and do things the right way, you can minimize them. I just bought the new Ohlins R&T and I'm hoping the camber plates on these units are an improved design. Andrew, are they?

Not sure but I believe the Works plates are rebadged Ohlins plates (which seem like rebadged Cusco plates). They're at least very similar.

The Vorshlag plates just use a massive spherical bearing that lasts a long time and is quiet. They also use come with their own upper spring perch integrated with the camber plate that has it's own bearing that lets the spring rotate freely like a torrnington bearing would (and no need to regrease ever). The integrated upper spring perch also means a low stack height, so more bump travel at a given ride height. Oh and they add caster. They're pretty good plates.

Whiteline makes a polyeurathane rear lower shock mount if that's where you have an issue.

Check over everything in the right rear.....make sure everything's torqued correctly, also check your endlinks.

diesel, the latest Ohlins built in Sweden appear to have better build quality overall but I don't know anything specifically about the cambre plates. I haven't spent much time with them yet myself. They paltes will certainly be good at first at least. The Vorshlags are just kind of the ultimate at this point.

We are also offering our new GTWORX plates which are a similar design to the Vorshlags but slightly cheaper. Big bearing, add caster, etc. Details to follow tomorrow.
