A little update on mine....checked through the whole suspension and found my coilover to be making the noise. The top bearing is shot which is causing a lot of movement in the coilover and popping noises. Now the long warranty battle with Megan.....

The noise is the swaybar hitting the subframe on the transmission side(not to confuse lhd and rhd cars) of the car. To check, pull the wheel off, grab the swaybar and push it towards the other side of the car and see if it hits the subframe. There is only about 10mm clearance. I used sway bar lateral locks and it fixed the noise permanently. The reason all previous fixes are temporary is that when you jack the car up, the sway bar re-centres, giving you a few weeks of noiseless driving. The sway bar inches sideways until it again makes contact with the subframe. I keen to hear of this helps anybody

ill give this a shot as well as give my top strut a good grease up , otherwise i may be replacing the top strut to railliart ones

I used a coolant hose because its what I had without running out to part store, but i have been looking at more permanent solution. So if someone finds something more suitable, then let us know. still leaning towards bearing or top cushion as being the responsible one for the amount of play.

I also have this clunking/thumping noise, generally when going straight on and going over slight bumps, so I'm fairly positive it isn't the CV shaft. I have stock suspenders cut down a bit by the PO.

The thing is, I don't really notice it the first few minutes of driving. It seems to get more noticeable as I drive on. How plausible is it that the oil in the struts gets heated up a bit from the movement, becomes less viscous, and lets the spring move more over bumps, therefore allowing parts to make contact?

update for mine

yesterday i greased up top nut strut, checked swaybar for movement, tightened everything up and then it still remamined.
today i went ahead and tightened the top strut nuts. the right one was about half a turn with a rachet til it was tight, the left one i tightened for about 30seconds and seemed to keep going, dont know if its threaded or the whole shock is spinning with it, either way the car has stopped clunking/knocking .. i will update if it returns or is gone completely !

update*

so the clunk is back lol.. seems when i tighten it it just spins the coil , which seems useless but for whatever reason it stops clunking knocking for a day or two, then slowly creeps back !! must be spring or top strut related but i dont wknow what to do do investigate further ??

Yeah there is a special tool to hold top bolt, I have seen others in forum use makeshift gadgets to hold damper on the bottom. i wouldnt recommend that as you could damage it. I am betting yours is like mine and its the bearing that has been worn. I have not pulled off car to verify buy it seems the only cause. Guess will find out soon. Will take pictures as well.

My MR was making a good clunk on the driver side so I took it apart and found the bearing in the strut mount was pretty bad and both my front struts were pretty much shot. The car has 95K and im pretty sure its the original stuff. Im pretty broke so I just bought two new strut mounts from the dealer and ordered two front Bilstein HD's from tire rack. While I was waiting on the new stuff to come in I had to put the car back together and funny thing is the noise went away. I'm assuming that upon reassembly I tightened the slack out of the bearing in the strut mount. Last night I installed the new struts and mounts and OMG what a difference. I had no idea how bad the struts were. The car feels much more crisp and stable with no where near the harshness going over bumps.

Yes he means the bearing that is in the upper strut mount itself.
