Clunking front end noise??
Yeah the passenger side strut went bad on me, groaning and thumping. I was able to pinpoint the problem with a stethoscope while bouncing the fender. This throwing parts at the problem seems crazy to me.
Believe me, I'm not trying to just replace parts till I find the one that works. I've been plagued with front suspension parts for years. Blown struts, bad wheel bearing, separated tie rod end from tie rod (destroyed both parts), bad cv, and now the other inner tie rod. Through all this I've still had the dreaded clunk.

I'm having the same issue. If I pull out of the garage in the morning about 1 ft. I get a clunk noise and if I turn a certain way out of a parking spot or go over a bump, same clunk. This started happening after I changed out my perfectly good kyb struts/top hats to used bilstein struts/top hats. I've already changed out to 2 new bilstein struts. So my conclusion is to change out the tops hats on both the front left/right side now. Every bushing and bolt has been loosened to inspect and tightened according to factory spec.
I'm going to order new oem strut top hats tonight. STM might have them...

Hope yours is the same problem.
Oh yeah, it was the driver side mount bolts that was loose in my problem
Hello all,
recently purchased my first evo!! 2006 IX about 2 weeks ago. Thought I had a passenger front strut going bad, but after reading this thread turns out that is probly not the problem. I have ordered an EGR valve that my evo is throwing a code for. I know it can be deleted but for the time being I am just going to replace it. Once it comes in I will also start investigating the dreaded clunk and let you know what I find. So many vehicles with the same clunk and it seems so many causes. A DIY sticky on 'solving mystery clunk' could prove very helpful......

Update:
So I changed out the inner tie rod the other day and to no suprise the clunk was still there. It had a little play so it needed done anyway.
Today I changed the passenger top hat. When I dropped the strut out the top hat did move up and down. After I changed it out and took it for a spin, NO CLUNKING!
Now take this with a grain of salt because usually when I jack the car up the noise will subside for a while. It's also raining pretty hard so that makes it harder to hear. The up and down play wasn't good anyway so it needed replaced.
I would suggest to everyone to drop the side in question and check for play. I will get back in a couple days for an update.

Hey all! I'm having the same problem in my evo 8. I just did wheel bearing thinking race was bad but to my dismay no... I also have a problem when braking between 75-35mph that the wheel shakes pretty bad. Its gotten worse in the last few weeks. Anybody think this is due to top hat also? Didnt know this to be a common problem. I don't want to keep throwing parts at it either. And btw this is on passenger front

shaking when braking is probly a rotor issue; being new to EVO's can anyone else back me up on this?
I received my EGR Valve yesterday from Rock Auto. Went out to the car to check it out and found a vacuum hose had come off. So, reset the engine light and giving it a couple few days to verify that was the issue before I return the EGR Valve (or PM me if you need one). It is not supposed to rain today so I will tear into that clunking noise after work today
First I want to describe my noise again. It has gotten progressively worse the past 2 weeks. It seems to come from the passenger side. The worst is when going over bumps while turning left. It does not do it when turning right. Sometimes when going straight but only for substantial bumps. When turning left the smallest bump will cause the noise. Sounds like a back and forth clunking.
Pulled the wheel, jacked up the car. Jiggled everything I could to no avail. Took out a second jack and jacked up the suspension. At this point, thought I could notice the slightest play in the tie rod. So I turned the wheel to the left and verified there was some play in the tie rod. To verify, I turned the wheel to the right and was unable to replicate the slight play.
I do have the whiteline roll center kit installed, so that replaced the outter bushing. This was on the car when purchased so I am not sure how old it is. It seems to me the play is from the inner tie rod end. Not ordering any parts yet, going to investigate further

OK, so update on my noise. put my car up on a lift; the passenger side bottom caliper bolt was sticking out a good 1/2 inch. put the gun on it, click click click click.... it would not turn. stopped the gun real quick as I did not want to snap the bolt. So it would appear I need the caliper retapped for a bolt. I did not try to back it out in fear that it may not go back in. still seems funny to me that the noise is only made when turning left.
