thinking about trying different tires

right now im on yokohama s.drives. in the past i have also used yokohama advan s.4 with no problems and they have lasted me pretty decently. i also used michelin alpin p3 in the winter/snow season in germany, but most of that experience was on my rsx. right now i have the s.drives on my evo, but im thinking about changing them out for some all seasons.

one reason is i live in dfw, and while everyone and their grandma told me there really arent any winters here, theres a bunch of snow right now outside and im thinking it would be best ot be prepared, but also i dont like the way the s.drives perform in the rain. i am planning on moving back to germany as well. i was thinking about swapping back to the advan s.4, but i kinda dont like the price tag on those. does anyone have a better suggestion? i mean honestly the price is the only thing stopping me, they were pretty good on the rsx, but i have never had any experience on the awd heavier evo.

here in the states i pretty much drive conservatively, save for a few spirited blasts down the interstate/freeway/highway/tollway. i dont race the car much. in germany however, i do a lot of spirited driving and canyon carving, as well as autobahn (nuff said). also germany has 4 seasons with real snow during the winters.

i do have a second set of rims and the michelin alpin p3 on them, which i dont mind wearing during winters. i just need to replace two of the tires. somehow the negative camber from the swift springs wore the tires down to the belts on the most inner corners. very annoying, if you look at the tire, they look new, but on the furthest end of the tread patch, belt is showing. i was pissed. i was going to put them on last night to prepare for the snow we were going ot have.

suggestions?

Kumho Ecsta 4X really good tire for all weather. Good dry grip too and not too expensive. like 120 bucks a tire for 235/40/17

As far as camber wear on your tires, that is to be expected when lowering a car. You need to realign the car to avoid that.

If using the oem 235/45-17's.... I'd look at the Kumho 4X as best lower priced option. A step up from there would be Pirelli's P-Zero Nero A/S and Bridgestone's RE970 A/S. Those two will work well in light to moderate snow leading up to you installing the dedicated winters. Good wet traction and decent life also.

tire rack says kumho's are 130 a tire in the size. 420 tread wear and I have driven on these tires and they handle well.

Same tires are made in the 245 so I'd still look at those.

I'm pretty impressed with the Continental DWs so far. Not as responsive as stock Yokos but also not bad especially for the price

im trying to learn more about the tread wear rating. what does 420 mean? i really would like these tires to last a while. once i get back to germany getting decent name brands will be hard to get. they only have dunlops and some other b.s., and decent name brands cost a fortune

Tread wear basically is how long a tire last , also normally tires with a lower tread wear are a softer compound and have more grip. But these numbers are relative to each manufacture.

Like not R comp track tires such as a NT-05 or RS3 is like a 140 tread wear

where as a Advan AD08 is 180

and a A/S tire would would be like 400+

per say, but its not black and white. It's all relative because when tires become to hard of a compound then the performance is also lost. That is where you need to find the balance and choose what is best for your needs.

Let us know how you like them. Happy so far with my re970as. Curious about your inner wear. I run about -2 camber up front and -1.5 in the rear. With the toe zeroed out front and rear inner edge wear is very minimal. Wore some DWS tires all the way down with very even wear and my Star Specs are down to 4/32" and show very even wear. Wondering if you're running more camber than me or if your toe needs to be closer to 0?
