Clunking noise front drivers side???
One way you can check for worn ball joints is to:
1: Jack up the front of the car so both wheels are off the ground and put it on jack stands
2: use a floor jack under the lower control to raise it a little bit too take pressure off the ball joints and bring them into the same alignment as they would be at ride height.
3: grip the outsides of the wheel at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions and try to move the wheel up and down. It takes some getting used to but on really shot ball joints you'll see the wheel move independent of the rest of the suspension. Also moving the wheel in and out (pull top hand outward as you push the bottom hand inward and vice versa) will expose some of this play.
using the above method can also be a good way to find bad wheel bearings. Also if you switch your hands to 3 and 9 and move the wheel in and out in quick short movements, you can check for bad tie rod ends.

I have something similar i feel like it might be a top-hat issue. I replaced a tie rod, and end links, the noise is still there. The ball joint looks ok visually. Shock isnt blown. Still replacing crap to try and fix it.

a slightly worn strut mount will rattle against the upper spring perch. a cheap way to test for this issue is to put a washer between the two. it does require disassembling the strut though. a tight fitting washer is needed.
Little update, I got around to taking off my coil overs and finding the collars were seized and also noticing one was slightly higher then the other (ride height wise). Finally got the collars off and redid the ride height on both sides, and since i have noticed i haven't heard any noises, YET. Will still be replacing the ball joints most likely though.
I don't know the answer except to say you gotta have a little perspective when searching for the causes of noisy Evo suspensions. Hear a suspension noise in a normal passenger car and something is wrong - it is as simple as that. The front suspension on my Evo went clunk when I hit the gutter line driving it off the new car lot. 9.5 years later the front suspension is quiet but I was hearing a noise in the rear this spring. Now, that is quiet. These are sorta race cars and I think the engineers weren't quite so careful about making sure the suspension never made a sound. On the other hand you can't ignore everything. I guess the best advice is to check everything over whenever the car is up.
