The Evo is my third AWD car. I've previously owned a Subaru Legacy GT and an Audi A4. On all three cars I ran Michelin Pilot AS3's as my "winter" tires. I live in Ohio and we see quite a bit of wet weather, slush, snow, and ice from late October until about Easter. Once a month I would travel 350 miles round trip to Indiana on a combination of highway & back roads. The A/S3s always served me well.

I've recommended the AS3's to my friends and I think we'll get a set of regular Michelin's for the wife's accord. I usually get them from Costco for a good deal.

AS3's!

I just run hankook s1 noble2's. decent and cheap. good in all weather. I don't push AT ALL on the street though, so I have no need for a high performance all season.

Conti DWS has my vote too for an all season tire.

I just don't feel like a snow tire is the right choice for me. Like I said, I don't drive in the snow. If the weather gets to the point where I don't want to drive the Evo
(very rare) then I have another car to drive. I prefer to daily the Evo. I have a 4 mile round trip to work.

For reference, it's currently in the 60s and dry. Temps fluctuate from mild to cool around this area and it rains a ton. Which is why I feel an all-season performance tire is better suited to my needs. I really want a tire that does well in the rain. I have absolutely no need for snow performance.

Will someone explain the benefit of a winter/snow tire in my situation?

There really is none. They'll just wear out really fast since they're never in snow. You're thinking is correct, just go with a good high performance all season.

FWIW, AS3 has stiffer sidewalls than Conti and is brilliant in wet but likely much less capable in snow. If you need an all-season for lower temps you can't get closer to a summer tire ...

The Conti with its sipes looks way better for snow action though.

One of the big downsides of the Evo in the snow is that it totally lacks any decent rust protection - kind of reminds me of an Italian car in the 70's

Oregon did not use salt until recently but I believe now does. Waxoil or similar the whatever out of it ..... Boeshield judiciously applied is also helpful ... do not use inside.
