Did anyone use the mitsubishi special tool to install/remove
front top strut nuts? Could anyone tell me what socket size
would I need to move them?

17mm with an Impacted gun. It's real easy is you have access to one.

 

I just used a regular closed-end wrench once the strut was out of the car, and didn't have any problems loosening it.

It might be easier to get the nut loose while the strut is still installed in the car.

Arent you suppose to loosen up the top nut w/o turning the
center portion of the strut???

 

An impact will spin the nut off without turning the shaft, no problem. You don't even really need a spring compressor either. I have a spring compressor and it stayed in my toolbox when I installed my Tanabe's.

 

But doesn't shop manual recommend not to use the
impact gun??

 

They say that so you don't over torque the nut. I have an impact that is only about 50bls, within the spec of the evo. I have been using them of years on struts without any trouble. If you like, you can take the nut off with a impact and install using a socket/ratchet. You may install it with a impact turned down low then check it with a torque wrench. It's only 45bls +/- 7lbs.
