REAL brake testing.... NorCal style

Got back from another brake test day at Thunderhill raceway and thought you guys might like to see just how toasty I got them........

anyone have any marshmallows?

4 sessions - all around 20 minutes long with rotor temps far in excess of 1000 degrees (pegged our digital pyrometer ) The results are promising.......stay tuned

BTW: the session before, when I rolled into the hot pits to get rotor temps there was twice the flame (on both front wheels!) looked like I was hiding a BBQ under my Enkei's

How did you keep your rims so clean?

I had that once (not a flame like you had) but saw smoke coming from the inside of my wheel and thought something was on fire. It was just the rubber pieces from the track smoldering onto the belly of my rim....

I have air guides on the car. How do other people feel they work?

What rotors are those?

Vishnu looks like they are running the same ones at OneLap.

prototype.......still in testing mode (We put a set on the Vishnu car to get some more feedback) stay tuned for details

The wheels are clean because the factory air guides are working! (you can actually see that the outer portion of the rim is pretty dark with brake dust and rubber scraps)

The test was run on Ferodo DS3000's front and 2500's rear , AP 551 racing brake fluid, Toyo RA1's and I have the factory air guides ( with the splash guards still installed )

Now if they are getting that hot you are cooking the fluid as well. I think what we need is some air ducts, and better rotors and we should be set. Anyone ever think of getting more air to the rotors?

Fluid was fine - Caliper temps were well in check ( 300*-350* degrees ). I was pleasantly suprised in the robustness of the calipers, all the seals, and dust boots were all in good shape / no melting. I bled the brakes once between 2nd and 3rd sessions but it wasnt needed (fluid was clean and bubble free, no signs of boiling-jelling).

The nice thing is that the rotors cool quickly, one cooldown lap and the temps were down to 600-650 degrees.
