X SSS owners: Is that radio worth it?
Impressions after 3300 miles of ownership? Stereo needs upgrading. Its going to be a bear since the head unit is in the middle of and integrated with the center vents, but I am sure some aftermarket companies will make one that will hold gauges and a single din unit, as well as redo the vents.
I like the SSS package, don't like the stereo.

Just search for 2008 lancer. They do offer it, but you can't buy from this site, you have to buy from a local dealer. Only concern that I have is the kit may not match the dash exactly.
So did you not like the hole Rockford system: touch screen, speakers, & sub, or just one aspect?
The aftermarket does so much better w/sound systems. When I heard that the Rockford system was going to be 650 (750 - can't remember) watts, I was very disappointed. I was expecting more, why, I don't know. Anyways, my aftermarket sh*t will be double that & will be custom, for less than what Mitsu would want
.
Yep, love the HIDs, like the FAST key, indifferent on the spoiler, not feeling the stereo.
Thanks for the Metra link. That is what I need! I think I can modify the pocket section to accept a couple of gauges.

I didn't get the Navi, just the SSS, so I don't have the touch screen. As far as what I don't like about it, I think the door speaker components are awful. The quality of the speakers themselves are bad and the placement is bad. The sub is not very loud or clean, the amplifier section is too soft and distorts with volume. I want quality speakers and clarity. I guess I want component Focals where they aren't as low in the car as the 6.5s are at my feet, but somewhere in the door where they will sound nice. When I do replace it, I'll rip out everything, except maybe not the sub and the rear door speakers, since those are just filler. The head unit, amplifier(s) and front speakers gotta go.

I don't have one yet (hopefully the MRs come here and the transmission is stout!) but my friend does have a X GSR with SSS. To me it only seems worth it if you REALLY want the big wing and HIDs, as well as a decent factory stereo till it gets upgraded. If it wasn't for that, I would probably opt out of the SSS in the GSR (don't think you can in the MR?). For a factory stereo I can't really fault it. It hits well enough for stock. Just seems like it is kinda flat, even after playing with the bass/mid/treble/fade/sub settings. I think I settled on +6 treble, +2 mid, +1 bass, -1 fade, then tuned the sub so it didn't overpower everything but still hit. YMMV.
EDIT: It wasn't the stereo that was flat, it was the music. Different music is much brighter and sounds good!

i currently have a full alpine system in my car, and the upgraded rf is ok for someone who has never had a "system" in their car, but its definately a step down for me. i was able to listen to it on a test drive and i was REALLY unimpressed, and the salesman kinda acted like i offended his momma when i said "this thing honestly sounds like shat." if i go with the sight and sound package ill be yanking all that stuff out the first week i have it.

the only reason i got the upgraded the stereo was because im tired of doing stereos on my cars. and i like the factory clean look. as i am getting older, don't feel the need for a knocking sound systems. I rather hear the tiny snail spool.

All personal opinion. Ive done my time with the pulling and adding of aftermarket sound systems and i am tired of having to deal with it. I am going to get it cuz its a fairly good system for stock and you won't have to go hacking up wiring harnesses and making ground spots for amps and head units.
just got the evo x w/ the sss pkg. i listen to mostly rock. I think its a decent system that I could live with for the time bieng, but not really outstanding. bass is good and more than suffient for me, and most ppl will be happy with the unit. I dont think Im that picky of an audio enthusiast. usually a $1,500 unit with a good hu, decent f/r components, and a average compact woofer will make me happy.
What i dislike most about the SSS stereo is the ipod integration for the unit. the aux cables will not charge the ipod. using a separate charger adds annoying static to the sound. the aftermarket apline 9885 unit i have on my 240sx does not have this issue.
Also, the treble is relatively weak, and the system not as loud as I would like it to be. When the funds become avail, I will be sure to upgrade the hu, front & rear components, and get a good amp. The woofer is decent enough, so I'll leave that be. Mind you, this is a very decent unit I could live with and upgrading the sound system isn't really too much of a priority right now. For the $$$, you really cant complain.

Simple questions:
1 - where is the amp located?
2 - can i swap stuff out without having to hack stuff up? Or does it all use factory wiring harness? (IE: just swap an amp / sub in, just swap in new speakers)

^This would also depend on the wattage of what you would swap. I have no idea what gauge wiring they use, but this would be an important factor on power handling.
Just got my X last night with SSS and Powdercoated Black wheels, and all I have to say is I love the sound system. Ive never been a fan of aftermarket radios and subs and stuff, but it sounds very good in the X. I agree clarity isnt THAT good, but that can be easily fixed with some better door speakers.
^ you are correct about plugging in the front. you need something like this:
