I'm ordering the F90BT to install in my new X GSR with Fosgate option. I want to go with a pro install. I want to keep the stock speakers and sub, at least initially. Since I apparently can't use the stock amps and have a 5.1 setup, anyone have advice as to what setup to use? This was the recommended mounting kit, so I will order that one unless I hear a compelling argument not to:

I'm going with the F90 because I want 5.1 surround for my concert DVDs and because it seems to have the best IPOD interface out there, to include voice control of the IPOD which for me is like the holy grail of car audio.

I might have to go with some foam filler or something too...I've had some raw cars before but none where you hear every grain of sand hitting your wheel wells. I wonder if the mud flaps would help?

Also, anyone know good installers in the D.C. area with experience with the new Lancers?

 

I'm not sure what you mean by a 5.1 setup, the rockford system does not have a center channel. Are you planning to add a center channel once you install the F90? The "5" means how many speakers and the ".1" means 1 subwoofer. My SSS package only has 4 speakers (well 8 if you count the tweeters). Either way, I don't believe the F90 has a center channel output for 5.1? Dont' remember for sure though...

Still, the F90 is a nice unit, and it has Ipod voice control which is awesome.

For an amplifier, I'd recomend a good 5 channel amp. Kicker and Alpine both make a nice 5 channel.

Sound deadener is always a good idea, I just put a little bit behind the factory sub and it sounded better, so doind the whole trunk/doors/etc should help a lot. But it will also add some weight to the car.

Install, can't help you there, unless you want to drive to vegas, I'll do it LOL

 

Yes, of course you are correct on the 5.1. I had a 5.1 DTS setup in my Audi S6 and now I feel deprived. There was no discrete center channel, but the HU simply split that channel between the two fronts, which is what I imagine they all do.

So a single 5-channel is the way to go? Is a dedicated amp for the cabin speakers even necessary for the stock setup with the F90BT pushing 22/50 per channel? I wonder what the sensitivity is of the stock speakers.

Will I need capacitors installed to split between the mids and tweeters or is the factory setup good enough meaning a simple HU and amp swap using existing wiring?

I appreciate the advice; I just want to be informed when I go to get an estimate so they don't try to sell me a bunch of crap I don't need

As far as the sound deadening, I surely don't want to indiscriminately add weight, since my Evo is a performance machine first and an entertainment center second, but I've got to find a happy medium.

Vegas is a bit far, though it would help me get through this annoying 600-mile break-in

 

You may not even need the amp for the cabin speakers. I would guess that the factory RF amp is pushing similar power to the Pioneer deck, maybe slightly more. Obviously bumping up the power with an amp would be a little more loud. Depends on your listing habits and of course, your budget.

Good question on the capacitors/ crossovers. That is something I'm not sure of, since I haven't dug into my system yet. I would like to believe there is probably caps on the tweeters, but I'm not sure. The crossover might be built into the amp. The factory wiring should suffice just fine for the factory speakers. If you are upgrading the speakers and using an aftermarket amp, I'd replace the wires. I was going to replace the wires anyway on my car since speaker wire is cheap, and my own labor to do it is free

The sound deadening can get heavy, but there are probably more lightweight solutions nowadays. I'd do a search on this forum reguarding that, I think I've seen a thread about that before. I know products like dynamat (or the similar, less expensive stuff) gets pretty heavy, but unless you are going for a pure race car, your not really going to notice a little extra weight.

Anyway, good luck with the project. I'd do a search on here to see what other people have done with thier X's. There are a bunch of good threads on here.

The installer I went to said not to use Alpine amps with Pioneer HU's...he said they have seen a lot of distortion with that combination and even the Alpine rep told him not to use their amps with Pioneer.

He recommended the JBL GTO5355, which does 75W RMS x 4 + 360W RMS Channels at 2 Ohms

I'm wondering if it would be better to use the Kicker ZX700.5, which claims 85 watts RMS x 4 chan. at 2 ohms + 420 watts x 1 Class D Sub channel

I say that because of the extra power going to the sub...I'm worried since Mojito https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/6720474-post35.html put the Alpine PDX5 in and said that that the sub channel (300w) did not seem powerful enough for the SSS Fosgate sub

My installer said he could always install the F90 with the HU powering the cabin speakers and an amp for the sub, but it would likely not be enough for high volume without distortion

It kills me that you can't find the specs of the SSS Fosgate speakers and amp!

Yeah, and that's basically the only info out there...no per-channel split, no RMS, no THD, no SPL on the speakers. Probably safe to say they're all 2 ohms, but that's about it

It makes you wonder what kind of cheap crap Fosgate put in the car when they won't publish any specs on it

 

I hope they have updated these since the release, I was looking at this unit when I first got my car. But there were so many bugs and interface issues at the time that I decided against it. Let us know how it turns out for you.

 

If you're talking about the F90BT, they have made a lot of updates and the general consensus is that it is now a good unit. The one I ordered arrived with a "version 2.0" software update sticker on the box.

 

Did the update help with the long boot-up time?

It reduced it...supposedly down to around 30 seconds now, although the music starts back up even sooner (it was closer to a minute boot before the patch). Not really that bad considering it is running windows
