Help! Very weak sound output on speakers!
i was driving down a road like usual, my sound is set on a modest 20 on the MMCS. then suddenly the sound went out like a light. i see that the headunit is still working, but i hear nothing. tried switching modes, using the BT voice commands, nothing. all i hear was a very faint buzzing noise. cranked it up to the max, and all i hear is a faint sound from the radio station, almost masked by the buzzing noise it is generating.
so the sound is there, just nearly non-existent. nothing peculiar strikes me as to why. i checked the amp fuse just in case (in the engine bay), and it was good. the radio fuse in the passenger fuse box has to be good, or the unit won't turn on.
my warranty is still intact, but would like to avoid it if possible, considering i may have to leave my car there. so i'm stuck - anyone have an idea?
here is a video - make sure you crank up your audio really loud (this is not a joke btw), or you won't hear the faint radio sound it has. this is literally all i hear. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQHytyXNMy8
note: this is the stock rockford system with oem BT voice control unit. no upgrades were done to it.

bump - okay i'm not sure what's going on, but it happened again. started up my car, same scenario. this time though, every 5 minutes or so, i hear a LOUD burst of volume, and immediately it quiets down again. what the hell could this be? poor ground? but it's all using stock harnesses...?
and webman, it's not just radio - the same applies for any function, including voice nav.

sounds like you got a short man.... I had the same thing in an old altima I had a while back. Some popping noises, sizzling... then eventually a big POP and nothing. The head unit had a short in it. I would take apart the dash, check all the wires to make sure nothing has melted the coating and is shorting as well as crossed wires. Make sure the grounds are good and solid and also check the connections at the amp. If you can.... and havent found any issues with the other wires.... pull apart the doors and check the speaker connections.

i had some time to dig into it piece by piece today, and i isolated it to either the green harness or the small gray harness that connects directly into the MMCS. i unplugged both of them at the same time so i can't say which one it is (and i don't know the wiring schematics, pardon my ignorance), but i know when i plugged them back in the speakers came live again.
i didn't check the wiring and so forth on it (should have, but didn't come to mind), but at least i know where to start when it happens again. i'll update this again when it happens and probably check the grounds in the dash too.
