2014 OEM HU in older models
2014 OEM HU in older models
Hey guys,
How hard or would it even be possible to have the new 14 evo x headunit installed into a previous year evo x?
Had a chance to pick one up for a cheap price and was wondering if anyone has done this or know anything about it.
Any help would be appreciated.
Btw, I have a 11 with RF sub.
Thanks.

Someone posted this, just not in the evo x section and doesn't seem to work according to stealership.
(I really think they said this because they have no clue on what to do/what's needed to make it work)
Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

i'm in NJ and have the 14 radio out of my car if you want to come by and try it out - PM me if you're interested. honestly though i didn't like the radio all that much so I swapped it for a pioneer.. just my 2 cents
.. ??
Yeah, I'll keep you posted on how it turns out. Hoping it works and if not, I'll slap on a aftermarket HU

These two radios are not directly compatible.
For starters, the 2008 uses CAN B communication whereas the 2014 does not use CAN. Because of this there is no terminator for the bus line when you put the 2014 radio in.
The more disconcerting however is the 2014 uses a data line that communicates with the AC and transmission... and when you plug that in to a 2008 it shorts to one of the low bus lines for the instrument cluster.
Because of this... you're essentially freaking out the ETACS. Theoretically you could damage it as well, but I wouldn't say that is too likely.
You could try de-pinning pins 29 (Green/White) and 39 (may not be present, not used in 2008) of the 20 pin connector, Both rows second from last pins, and de-pinning pins 23 (Orange) and 33 (Black) of the same connector (third pin in, both rows).
Pin 31 is also a low bus line, but it is used on both radios so it is likely OK to stay.
And additional potential concern is the antenna amplifier wire which is not present on later models... I don't know if the radio still has the internals to support that or not, but if it is different inside at that pin, it will be problematic as well (pin 34, Pink).
On the 18 pin connector pins 2 (black) and 3 (white) went to the bluetooth system, and on the 2014 model pin 2 goes to the auxiliary audio jacks.... so you want to disable those as well as you will be potentially sending audio in to the bluetooth com lines if someone were to switch to aux.
On the 2008 pins 8, 9 and 18 are for the center display, but on the 2014 pins 9 and 18 are for bluetooth.... so again a potential issue, though knowing there is no longer a center display it may not be a problem, just of course bluetooth won't work.
In short.... yeah, you shouldn't try to swap those. Theoretically however, if you take care of the above bus faults and crossed circuits the radio should behave like an aftermarket radio at that point and should work. That is speculative as this isn't something that has been done successfully that I am aware of, but I'm sure if that works there will be many people to follow as most people like the new radios (Apart from the awful glare on the screen).
My recommendation would be to not do fool with it, however if you choose to you must de-pin the wires.... do not cut them, as they do not do well when reattached, bus lines are very particular.
I have decided not to even try this, will just look for an older NAV unit on ebay
