High Beams work Intermittently?

Hello all,

I have a 2010 GSR with the factory HID lights (SSS package). I noticed about a month ago I tried to turn my high beams on and it didn't work. I thought maybe I didn't click it right so I tried it again and this time it worked. Well tonight I was driving home and they wouldn't click on at all. I tried turning the lights on and off all the way, turning my fog lights on and off, basically I tried troubleshooting things while inside the car. As soon as I got home I pulled my fuse/relay box and pulled out the high beam relay and switched it with the fuel pump relay. They still didn't work. I could hear the "click" inside the engine compartment everytime my wife tried to turn on the high beam but nothing seemed to work. Suddenly it started working again just fine. Out of curiosity, I pulled the high beam relay and they still worked... so either I pulled the wrong relay or I don't understand how they work. I doubt this is a fuse issue... since they seem to work on and off. I heard there are solenoids inside each headlight... but I don't think that's what it is because both headlights stop working at the same time and they resume working at the same time as well. Can someone point me in the right direction? And could someone possibly post a picture as to which relay is the correct relay? I went off the cover to show me which one it was but it's possible I read it wrong. Thanks!

found this recall under my VIN 2010 gsr

SR-15-002
15V232
Apr 16, 2015

DUE TO A MANUFACTURING ERROR, THE ETACS ECU ON AFFECTED VEHICLES MAY CONTAIN COMPONENTS WITH A HIGH ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE. THIS CONDITION CAN RESULT IN VOLTAGE INSTABILITY, AND IN THE WORST CASE, THE VEHICLE COULD LOSE HEADLIGHTS, TAIL LIGHTS, AND/OR WINDSHIELD WIPER FUNCTIONALITY.

if you havn't had any recall work done, check your vin number on mitsubishi's site and see if you have this.

Thanks for the reply. I had the ETACS replaced recently under the recall. This issue happened both before and after the recall. I dunno if it changes anything... But when the high beams are supposed to be on (and aren't) the little LED on the dash shows it being on. That would eliminate the turn signal having a short in it, right?

I'm not sure about the short in the turn signals. But if your high beams are not working, than the solenoid inside your projectors are possibly getting stuck. You mention on your post that you hear the clicking when you had your wife try it so they are getting power to them.

I can only suggest you stop by the dealer and have them take a look at it. I'm assuming you didn't do any mods to your headlights like black them out or retrofit so they should be able to help you without charging you.

Thanks for the replies. I've noticed when the high beams stop working, it is both sides that won't click to high beam. When they decide to start working again, they both work great. Wouldn't this eliminate the possibility of it being the solenoids inside the headlights? Seems very unlikely that they would both stop working, and then both start working at the same exact time. Does one headlight run THROUGH the other headlight? I.E.... if one high-beam solenoid fails does it not send power to the other headlight? Does anyone have a decent understanding of how the power is routed? Thanks everyone!

From my experience, if its not oem the dealer will blame the issue on that. Also if you got aftermarket hids you may wanna try testing/replacing the ballasts if you're having problems with your light output or not turning on or off.

Makes sense, if both intermittently work/don't work together, can be a problem with your electrical. But they both derive from your fuse box in your engine bay through a single relay so if one mechanically fails the other would operate unless of course both fail.

heres a thread from the other forum that has the fusebox diagram in pdf (just scroll down a bit)
http://www.evoxforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3928

I was referring to the shields that the solenoids control that possibly are getting stuck cause I've read of it happening on another forum (sorry for not being more clear). Since you said you still hear the clicking, then the solenoids should be recieving power.

heres a vid of how the shields operate (these are off fx-r projectors but you'll get the idea of how our oem projectors work)

hope this stuff helps.
