Talking Gear Based Mivec works!

After a couple more weeks under my belt I can reveal that the more aggressive MIVEC is helping 1st-4th gear spool with as much as 35* intake advance while the 5th gear MIVEC has the exhaust and intake reduced in the trouble areas for the 160+ load and 3000-4000 rpm range. Many thanks to Gunzo for modifying my rom file to allow this, hopefully he can come up with an easy way for those wanting a similar setup without having to manually modify each rom file. This is a great drivability mod for those running larger turbos and can also be used to run a more MPG friendly 5th gear cruising map as well.

The Dyno showed as much as 360 wheel torque and was on it's way to 420-425 whp on the STM mustang dyno with a few more tweaks. Sadly my wideband datalogging connection died after the 3rd run and I couldn't reliably tune the 6000-7500 rpm range where the WHP was flatlining at 400 whp instead of climbing like it normally does. My suspicions are that the extra negative exhaust retard that worked before may be too much for the smaller diameter Full-Race exhaust manifold and/or the AFR's are going to rich for good power. Either way I'll be back on the dyno once I get that curve to climb properly before the Onelap event.

There is a full detailed article here:

http://onelap.rochesterdsm.org/2010/...mivec-madness/

Either way I'm happy that in the warmer weather the car has no more surge at all when going WOT at 60 mph in 5th and it makes for a very easy to drive daily driver again. In colder weather it still does a slight flutter at 3750 as the boost gets past ~27 but that is to be expected.

You can check out the detailed maps at the One lap site as well as the dyno plots and video.

Yeah, I've been using it for a while too and I have mine set where it changes in 4th gear. With larger cams, it was difficult to hold aggressive mivec settings for 4th & 5th so I have mine switch in 4th gear

As of right now, you have to manually alter the original rom so that the warmup map is now based on a gear crossover value which can be set for however you want. As SiC mentioned he has old #1 warmup maps take effect when he enters 4th and 5th gear where as mine are set so only 5th is effected.

The only drawbacks at the moment are that you lose the reduced Mivec effect during warmup so you need to not hammer on the car until you are 150*F+. The fact that very few people know how and what to modify in the rom file without risking bricking your ECU means it's also a bit tricky. Gunzo is one of the guru's that frequents this board and the other evo x forums, when he gets time I believe he will try and streamline the process so it can be done yourself but in the mean time you would have to have him do the modification.

I presume/hope Gunzo is just modifying the cold/warm map cross over points for the mivec maps?

Yes I believe he is changing the cold/warm map cross over points for the mivec maps, along with changing them from reading temperature over to gear similar to how the boost control determines which gear you are in.

At least that is the way I understand it.

I think this would be great also! I got pulled over for too loud of an exhaust through a construction zone last week. My exhuast noise definitely fades down from 3k to 3500 RPM (GST posted MIVEC), but I was in the loud range then. I'd love to have a quieter drive!

So I am bringing a thread way back from the dead but i was wondering if this ever came to fruition? I think this would be a nice thing to have. Make 6th gear not be too damn aggressive on the overlap for cruising down the highway.
