Whats a fair amount to pay for a tune?

There seems to be a pretty big difference in tuning prices from the vender's I have called. What do you think is a fair price to pay, also doing a cam install and that to is priced quite differently from shop to shop...

I would pay $2-300 for a road tune and $3-400 for a dyno tune. If you have some crazy setup, making huge changes (fuel injector scaling, cams, speed density, etc.) I can see it costing a bit more for the extra time involved. As far as cam install on the X, you're probably looking at 4-6 hours of labor.

Chad is right there on top of my list to do the work and tuning, but before I give anybody my hard earned money I thought I would ask my fellow Evo owner's what they think is fair. Give me some Dollar amounts. Ive been given price's from $375 for the tune and 500 for the cams to $700 for the tune and $700 or more for the cam install.

$700 + $700 is insane, but $375 + $500 seems reasonable.

Also consider that some tuners may charge less for a re-tune later. What about experience with the Evo X? How many cam installs have they REALLY done? Is that including valve springs and retainers? Something to think about rather than just upfront costs.

That being said, I have paid $200 for a road tune, $400 for a dyno tune, and $200 for (dyno) retunes.

I know tuners that charge $150 for the first tune, and $75 for each one after.
Others like Mellon that has a 1 time fee of around $300 or a subscription for 3 months where you can get lots of tune updates. And shops that do dyno tunes by either flat rates or by the hour, depending on what you need.

( I believe I can name Mellon, because he is a vendor on here, if not, I'll remove it)

As for e-tunes who do you guys recommend? Mellon seems to be popular on this site.

I believe there are a handful of vendor tuners on here.

I love my tuner, he is the best tuner I know and he is constantly updating my tune with little tweaks here an there.

The tune price may depend on whether it is stock ecu or aem or another type of engine management system.

The average dyno tune price is $350-450.

MAP quoted me 3-4 hours for a tune @ $160/hr. So thats $480-640 depending. Seems really high...that's why I haven't had them tune it yet

Really depends on if it's being road tuned or dyno tuned, and also who's tuning it, I suggest road tune, as it is done fair often, and gives you good daily driving/ road driven feed back during the tune, and most cases it's 1-2 hour tune.

Dyno tune should always be followed up with a street tune to clean things up.

$300-450

Thats for minor bolt ons. Like others said, if you have huge injectors, running e85/meth, SD, it may take a little more time. But I dont think the tuner would charge extra. They should have base maps for those applications as well.

I think $500 tune $500 cams seem ok, but any higher is getting a little over priced! I think you all know who gave me a price of over $1400!!!

$400-500 for a dyno tune is a fair price, if a bit expensive, I'd say.
