It really just depends on your goals for your car. A lot of people will tell you to get a Tactrix cable and get EvoScan and do logging/collect a lot of data yourself, and you can get your own tunes. With the AP's they of course offer many OTS (off the shelf) maps which work fine, but are pretty basic. Although, also with an AP you can obviously get protuned as well so it's not like the OTS maps are your only option. You can save your tuners maps on your AP as well. If you're just going basic bolt-ons and don't want to sqeeze all the power possible out of your mods and keep it simple an AP should suffice. Even if/when you do get more serious about modding it's not like a tuner can't still tune through AP anyhow. One other thing to consider is where will you get your car tuned, and what are their preferred methods of tuning?
Hope this helped some. I'm sure others can chime in and give far more info than I can offer. Go take a look through the tuning sections and learn some more about tuning in general and see which route you'd like to go. From reading through the tuning sections I'm sure you'll be able to find out what's more for you. For me, I liked the simplicity of the OTS maps of the AP at first, and then when I wanted a protune I knew Ivey is a genius tuning with the AP.

Tactrix/EcuFlash is the more hands on alternative which sometimes requires you to modify xml files. It's true that others can help you, but if your not comfortable making some changes on your own, I would say the AP is the better choice.
AP is the most user friendly method of tuning, and it still offers the capability to self tune if you wish down the road.
That said, I choose Tactrix because I love being hands on and having the support of the majority of the evo community. Either method makes power...hell I think Hollywood uses the AP.
To each their own.

got one to go with my new evo. i got it and installed it with only 250 miles on the clock. have not felt the real power of an evo yet as i am still at only 580 miles. but i will say that it was very easy to install, and it is cool to be able to monitor boost and stuff with out all the "fast and furious" gauges.

You will get people from both camps. I recommend the ECUFlash route, especially with TephraMod being out now. If all you plan to do is get one of the exactly parts lists they provide, then you will be fine with their map, but you won't be at the full margin of tunability for your parts combination and it may or may not cost you more depending on your upgrade path.
My Evo IX experience with Cobb was enough to leave a bad taste in my mouth that won't lead me back to their products unless something amazing happens. Their support was 0 for the Evo community at that time, and I got to eat the cost for it (and not have the ability to get tuned while I waited a year).
