going from 3 inch cat back to gutted muffler factory catback

Hey guys, due to my neighbors and the local law enforcement it seems that i'm in need of a quiet exhaust. Currently i'm running a test pipe and a buschur quiet 3" exhaust. What I have done is completed the mod on my factory muffler to remove the corssover pipe and the flapper valve for better flow. Do you guys think that the factory cat back with these mods including my test pipe will be a huge restriction for me? My only other mod is a kn intake and uicp and a homemade tune. Nothing crazy. Has anyone used this exhaust setup with good results??

Get that cheap eBay 3" midpipe to go along with it. My guess is you won't lose too much power since you have a fairly basic setup. At least this way you'll have full 3" all the way back to the stock muffler.

If you're short on cash then you might as well. Personally I'd consider trying a resonated TP or mini-muffler. Often just reducing it a couple decibels or shifting the tone can be enough to not annoy people.

+1

A test pipe makes even the stock muffler sound like an exhaust.

I'm running that setup with an HFC, and have pretty good results. Unless you compare it side by side against a stock exhaust, you'd be hard pressed to tell it wasn't stock.

I went with a mini-muffler and it made a big difference. I have a full turbo back exhaust and never been pulled over. In contrast, I was always hammered in my Infiniti g35 with a test pipe and exhaust.

Honestly.... if you just stick a HF cat on along with that buscher it should be quiet enough. Then if they still complain buy a dB meter and show them it isnt that bad.

I have the HKS Hi-Power and isntalled it asa cat-back only...it was fairly quiet (too me at least), when I put a high-flow cat on (Milspec 100) the car began to drone constantly. I wouldn't say it is loud, but it this constant drone.

Would the car be quieter with a 300 cell count high-flow or with a mini muffler test pipe?

It might be quieter, but it would also be more of a restriction... IMHO I always found that the resonated test pipes seemed to conecentrate the sound at themselves, though muffled. This had the effect (in my unscientific perception) of making the car louder right under my butt, but quieter from a distance.

Hmm...that's what I feel. The cat made the car vibrate like mad. It actually resonates so bad you feel like you have to pop your ears.

My Ultimate Racing catback was like that, I couldn't wait to get rid of that thing. Since then I've had the Magnaflow and now the Cobb; both are great daily-driver exhausts with little/no resonance.

Interesting... and makes sense.

I have the Turbo XS exhaust and at the time when I was looking for an exhaust, I really wanted a resonated pipe.

Well after having my exhaust, I am very happy with it. It is loud-ish outside the car, but inside it's not too bad. Going 80 is really annoying, but everything else is fine. The car shakes my garage though.
