Are 3 port boost controllers tuned the same?

When I got my car second hand, it had a boost controller on it. No idea what brand. The power wires were not hooked up to the terminals and some of the hoses weren't hooked up. I was having problems with fuel cut at WOT high RPM gear changes that was remedied by removing the boost controller.

I have since purchased a new boost controller and want to install it. The problem is a) I know the car was tuned but can't get the previous owner or the tuner to confirm that it was tuned with the old boost controller and b) I don't know if I can just install the new boost controller assuming it was tuned for the old boost controller.

Questions: Are all boost controllers tuned the same? Am I correct in assuming I may be down on power if my WGA was tuned to the old boost controller and I am now running the factory solenoid? Do I risk installing it or do I need to wait for a retune?

These 100+ degree temperatures everyday are killing me. I need more power somehow!

Thanks,

I will attempt an answer. Forgive me if this is off base to your answer or seems remedial. I am not completely clear what your question is.

1. That said, the boost controller will allow you to vary the amount of boost your car is running. Being that the old controller is not hooked up you might assume you are running stock boost levels.

2. The fact that you don't know what the previous owner did is moot. You should proceed with what you should do.

3. Rasing the boost will give you more power but could damage your engine due to detonation. The summer heat is killing your power because hot air is less dense and will not combust as explosively as cold air. So it would seem raising boost is the answer, except for detonation.

4. My opinion, boost controller or not should be followed up by a professional tune. Or at the very least a cobb AP off the shelf tune based on your cars aftermarket parts.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I was unclear with my basic question: assuming the car was already tuned for a EBC, can I install a different EBC with the same tune?

Also, with my limited understanding of how a EBC works, the Grimmspeed instructions is says to tune with "approximate 30% reduction in WGDC". So if my car was tuned for the EBC then the EBC was removed, would my car then be down in power assuming the WGDC was reduced?

EBC is not the same as a grimmspeed solenoid, the EBC is like a MBC where you set your desired boost and be done, you can change brands as much as you like since your tune will be set for a certain psi, not the EBC.
The solenoid is a whole different deal, since you have to tune it via ecuflash, and that migh change from brand to brand, I'm not sure.
I think I answered your question, or at least I hope I did

1 - I think you are confusing EBC (electronic boost control[er]) with BCS (boost control solenoid), but we get what you are saying.

The answer is no, you cannot just swap it without risk. You may reduce power, you may add too much boost and blow up, you certainly won't be exactly the same (though it might be close if it was the same model BCS). There is an evo IX testing data thread by mrfred that shows some of the differences.

For instance: the EGR from an evo IX can be used as a direct fit BCS, but it controls poorly and requires 15-20% more duty cycle.

Also - if you don't know what the maps are they may be for the stock BCS which would probably make your motor go boom.

Thanks. That's the whole point, I was looking to avoid the "boom".

Sorry for the confusion from my intitial post. I meant to say BCS not EBC.

You will 100% need your tune adjusted if you change the solenoid to a different make/model/part.
